305 TPI to 383 TPI

I own a 87 Z with a 305 TPI, and my question is. I am building a 383 motor. I want to know if my TPI from the 305 will work. Also I want to know where I can get a prom for the 383 motor.

i had a 305 and put it on a 350. if you have the earlier type base plate the intake holes need to be re-drilled because of the angle change in 87.

Are you planning any other upgrades to the TPI other than the chip? The TPI is restrictive to a 305, with a 383 you're going to choke it for sure.

I agree with the Kid. The 383 really promotes a lot of torque, so it is a great match for a Miniram if you are not subject to emission testing. If you are subject to emission testing, then you either have to get a "free flow" TPI intake (base, runners and plenum) or look at the Superram.

As for an eprom, there is no stock eprom as GM never made a 383 TPI. You will need a custom eprom, either from an eprom writer or (better yet) do-it-yourself.

I won't get into the long list of reasons why you should consider learning how to burn your own eproms. If your interested, scope us out on the DIY Prom Board. But if you MUST get someone else to do it, I am inclined to recommend Ed Wright of Fastchips.

I have scoped out almost every "off-the-shelf" eprom and custom eprom from the major eprom writers. Ed Wright's eprom impressed me the most as a serious effort to make an eprom that addresses both WOT and part-throttle. It can still do with some "optimization", but considering Ed does not have "hands-on" access to your car, he does a fairly good job.
