Flat tappet cam and 083 heads
Flat tappet cam and 083 heads
Can't remember where, but I read that you can't use anything but a roller cam with the 083 (or any centerbolt) heads... Can't see why this would be true unless there's some different geometry but I was wondering before I ordered a cam kit..
Plus, if anyone has any opinions on what kind of cam would go good in a ported TPI setup on a 383 NA, I'm kinda stuck between a few and I need some direction

Wrong. The heads do not care what kind of cam is in the block. As long as the push rod length is right (as you state, correct geometry), any kind of cam will work fine with any heads.

No push rod length difference between the L98 and any other SBC.
However, push rods for roller lifters are shorter than those for flat tappets, because roller lifters are taller. And if you change the cam, the diameter of the camshaft is different from the original (duh - that's sort of the whole idea, isn't it?) so the optimum push rod length is often different.
