thinking about going big
hey guys, i was just thinking about this. i've been wanting to do an engine swap in my RS for a while. i'm tired of the 3.1, and all the electrical headaches it's been causing me (not to mention the stretched rods). well my buddy has a 496 big block out of a '03 Silverado, and i could pick it up dirt cheap. i was wondering what some people's opinions would be for this.
btw, this would be an auto-x/road race car. and i know that sounds crazy, but i'm more looking at the sheer torque of the engine for auto-x.

"Go big or go home", they say.
But, 496 in auto-x I would think would be a recipe for front/tail end swapping.
Keep hearing stories of V6 3rd gens outrunning V8 3rd gens in auto-x.
Ever considered an LS1?
What happened to the factory engine that came out of the '03 Silverado?

Re: thinking about going big
the Silverado took a Freightliner up the butt. everything from the back of the front doors is toast.
i've thought about an LS swap, but i can get the 496 for $600 complete. i'd have to find a 4L85E or modify a T56 to fit behind it, because there's no way i'm gonna fit an Allison 5-speed auto under the RS (the Allison equipped Silverado's had to have a 3" body lift from the factory to fit that beast in them)

id say go for it. maybe not in an auto x car but hey wat the hell. ive been told if you put alum heads on a big block its about the same weight as an all iron sbc. as far as the trans goes bbc and sbc share the same bell housing pattern so even a beefed up 700r4 could handle a stock 8.1

you can have the straightest shooting gun ever produced but it if you can't hold it steady you'll never hit your mark!
I agree that you would probably be way better off with the LSX swap.
