355 to 383

Hi people,

I recently have a 355 which I know is a 350 block bored .030 over. I want to upgrade my engine and stroke it out using a 400 crank (making it a 383ci)

My question is, can I use the same block that my 355 is? What type of machining will I need to do to it if I can?

Do I just buy a stroker kit with .030 pistons? Any help is appreciated.

Re: 355 to 383

the block will need to be bored over again, a 400 crank is needed and bigger pistons to match your bore size.

Re: 355 to 383

Thank you.

What is a good common bore size? Taking i'm not really sure if I want to keep my current heads on there, so i'm open to suggestions.

I want this engine set-up to have speed/power, but to also be as friendly as possible on gas.

If the cylinders aren't excessively worn, you may be able to use .030-over pistons agian. No way to know without taking it apart and inspecting.

This block has freshly been machined with new bearings/piston and rings/etc and what not and has way under 1k miles on it...

For sure something I will inspect once I get into this build. Building my ideas up. I see that most 383 kits come with pistons anyway.

It's normal to have pistons in a kit. To change the stroke, you need a new crank, and new rods or pistons.

Re: 355 to 383

If you have new pistons, rods(or reconditioned) and a freshly built motor all you need is a crank and some clearance. You can reuse your pistons rods and rings if there in good shape, with only 1k miles they better be.

No, you can reuse the pistons or the rods, not both. At least one of them has to change.
