Re: How to clean the cylinders!

Are we talking a short block? If so put it on a stand upside down and spray out each cylinder with contact cleaner or brake clean. Don't be cheap with the cleaner. Then coat each cylinder lightly with oil. I would try turning it over very slowly at the point to move the pistons maybe a half inch. Look at all the cylinder bores that have pistons moving down to see if they are streaking which would be a sign of dirt. Now turn the motor back the half inch and check the other four bores for signs of scrapping on the cylinder walls. If you see nothing you should be ok. The wrap the bloody thing in plastic and tape it up until you are ready to install it. Don't blame your wife for you leaving an open motor out. That's on you. I don't care where you put it. Even in our rebuild shop at work motors get covered at the end of the day if anything is left open.

Clean it some more. It very likely won't be an issue. The big worry would be premature ring seal failure. Even if it is truly a scratch if you can contain it to a very small area it shouldn't be an issue.
