454 Intake Question???

Okay, so I am swapping in a 454 this weekend and I have a couple of questions about hooking up the intake correctly. By the way big kudos to 57KID for helping me figure out the wiring for this thing. I am kinda new to this car building stuff and I am just trying to do it right. I have a 83 T/A that I am pulling the 305 out and replacing with the 454. I purchased the edelbrock performer intake for it and I am trying to figure out how to hook up the hoses on it. On the front of the manifold there are two ports on each side of the thermostat housing along with one on the very front of the manifold. I was told that the front port runs a hose to the water pump. The port on the right of thermostat is for temp sensor and the port on the left for one heater hose. That leaves on heater hose unconnected. Where does this go? I was talking to one of my buddies who mentioned plugging the front port and running one heater hose directly to the water pump and one to the manifold. Does this sound right. I figure that some one here has done this and would have some good advice. Last question- The vacuum port behind the carb I assume goes to the brake booster. Right or wrong? Thanks for all the help!!!

Re: 454 Intake Question???

There's a short bent hose that runs from the top of the water pump to the port directly in front of the intake manifold. That's simply a water bypass until the thermostat opens. You are correct with the other 2 ports. One is for a temp sensor and the other is the heater hose feed. The heater hose return line should go back to a port on the rad, not to the engine. If you want it to return to the engine, it has to go back to the water pump. Not all water pumps will have a second port. There would be 2 ports on top of the water pump. Technically you could tee off the single port on the water pump.

As for the vaccum port, it's just a vaccum source port for anything that needs a vaccum signal. If the carb doesn't have a large port on the back of it for the brake booster, it could be connected directly to the manifold. The port could also be used for other vaccum sources for accessories or a TH350 modulator. You could even use it for a MAP sensor.
