Re: need motor help
its nad 86 z28... i swapped in a 350 we built.. i did the timing.. and nothing.. like it will back fire out of the carb and sometimes the fuel in the carb catches fire.. but as for timing ive tried it all

Re: need motor help
if u have an MSD box u need a minimum volt level going to it or it wont fire properly , make sure u have good voltage.

How did you set it to begin with? What is it cranking like? Fast, slow ect...
If you unplug power to the distributor and the motor turns over a lot faster then you know you have a timing issue.

Re: need motor help
If you got gas backfiring in the carb, it probably the timing, did you off set the plugs? That's what happened to me. Instead of 8 and 1 being on the front of the distributor it's 1 and 2
Re: need motor help
its cranking not so much fast.. but not really slow and it back fires when i pump the gas sometimes.. and if the motor turns over faster.. what should i do if i have this problem??
Re: need motor help
well when i looked in the book for spark blug wiring it said electronic or points distributor.. i have one with a coil on top.. so thats an electronic right?? so i start with one then 8 and so on like it shows..
Re: need motor help
Yes you have HEI which is a version of electronic.

It doesn't matter where number one is on the distributor, as long as the order is correct. The only type of distributor that matters on is the optical pickup type.

Re: need motor help
To start from absolute scratch, find top dead center for #1
Then look where you rotor is...it should be pointing pretty much at #1 plug
This will rule out whether you are 180 Degrees out or not

My post #56 will show you a good angle for your Dizzy as a starting point

Re: need motor help
sorry i just have like a million people telling me diff things.. so ive checked to make sure i get fuel to the carb..and i get spark.. i have all the plugs gapped at 45..i turned the motor over and it backfires through the carb when i give it gas..ive tried turning the distributor 180 and its the exact same things.. when i do turn it over it sounds like its working really hard to do soo.. i know im at like 11 to 1 compression ratio..so thats all the things ive tried that i could think of trying

Re: need motor help
set the timing over again like mentioned above. I had similar issue on my motor in the first gen and turned out i messed up the timing. Once it started up just turned the distributer until it ran good.
Re: need motor help
Again i gave you a very simple tip for diagnosing a timing issue. I will say it again, disconnect the power fire from the distributor. Its a simple little clip on deal. If it turns over faster then go back to square one dropping the distributor.
If that doesn't do anything then look at fuel. But i will bet dollars to doughnuts its a simple timing issue.
For timing this is what you need to check. That at TDC you are on the compression stroke, and not the exhaust stroke. You can do this by either pulling the driver side valve cover or pulling the plug on cylinder one. Valve cover method means you are checking that both valves on cylinder one are closed. So the rockers should both be in the same position(up) and the pushrods should spin fairly freely.
With the spark plug method you simply put your thumb over the hole while someone turns the motor to TDC by hand and feel for compression. You will only feel it on the compression stroke since the exhaust valve is open on the exhaust stroke.
TDC should be 0º on your damper.
Personally i just set my damper to about 10º advanced and then drop the distributor in so the rotor is right at number one.

Re: need motor help
well looks like i found out what i was doing wrong.. when i went to take out my heater i had a wire that was somehow connected to the starter and it wasnt supposed to be..so it would draw amps from it and not enough power was getting to the motor..also once we corrected that.. the valves when to tight because that ne of the reasons we thought it wouldnt start.. so i back those off..timing on like i though.. turns over and fires.. just need to adjust the carb.. its either dumping to much fuel or not enough.. we just rebuilt it so itll need the adjust ment..thanks to everyone for putting your 2 cents in and helping.. i shoulda jsut paid more close attention..
