Engine: 1974 400 sbc/509 casting
Transmission: gearstar 4l60-700r4 race built
Axle/Gears: full on richmond 456
283 motor
need help/i have a 1957 corvett 283 fulie motor casting#3737739/want to rebuild/told by machine shop that those blocks were no good because of bad metal used for casting. need some PRO.input

A '57 fuelie Vette 283 belongs in a '57 Vette. However, that casting # is not a '57 block, it's '58-'64. That would be a good thing because that means it has the engine mounts cast on the side of the block. Of course, blocks weren't "fuelie" or "non-fuelie", they were blocks that had stuff put in and on them that made them "fuelie".
You'd be better off building a 350.

You can probably sell the 283 for enough to buy the 350. There's nothing inherently wrong with that 283 block.

There's nothing inherently "good" about it for a 3rd gen swap, either. . .

True enough, it'd be worse than a damn 305. Except maybe for gas mileage. But the liar who told him those blocks are bad is a liar.
