why r people this dumb
ok i bought a 85 comaro that started its life out as a sport coupe, now its a z28. the PO spent roughly $10,000 in this car for her son and then his friend told him that he know what he was doin. so they ripped the top half the motor apart to install new heads cuz one was cracked or so he was told by his friend. then it just sat there but all the wiring has been removed from the engine and now its mostly put back together but im running into some issues with the wiring. the engine is a 350 carb that was put in they cut two wires from the pos side of the batt hook up there is a bigger red one that is still hooked up to the starter but there is a thin orange one cut a med black one that is cut. also there is some random plugs that are just hanging. there is no a/c there is no smog pump if you can help me it would be great! i mean the friend was so dumb he cut the fuel line from the pump to carb cuz he was starting to strip the fittings by using an open end wrench. so i can really use help please!!

The medium size black one probably goes to the stud on the back of the alternator.

True this. I just looked on Mitchell. The alt on the '85 connects directly to the batt. Two fuse links come from the batt term of the starter. One to ign sw, the other to courtesy fuse, headlamps. Even with pictures of the existing wiring, it may be so fubarred that the OP just needs to get a factory diagram and start from scratch. Mitchell has a fairly simple diagram. Mitchell's available online at most public libraries.

I did the V8-into '85 2.8L Camaro swap a few years ago. The orig setup had a fusible link between the alt and the batt, and the rest of the wire was orange on the alt side. It was spliced into a red wire to the batt, from a PO replacing both batt cables. When I bought another pair of new batt cables from NAPA, the red wire wasn't red, it was black.
Color doesn't mean much after 25 years of modifications. Gauge matters, what connects to what matters, but not something so readily changed as color.

can you post pics of your specific wires in question? that would help us all out so were not guiding you blindly.

Re: why r people this dumb
dont know if this helps at all.
the color of the wire really doesnt matter, if its spliced into the pos, side then its a hot wire either way. the alt needs a wire going to the battery, so why would that cause any damage if the wire was black or orange. the only thing that matters is the gauge of the wire,( i beleive you need the 10 gauge wire) you could use either one if you really wanted to.(if they are both 10 gauge or bigger) but anyway, my alt. wire from the factory is black with a red tracer ,goin from the back of the alt. to the pos side of the batt. i had an ecm at one time and all the orange wires i had comming from the batt. went to the ecm. dont know if that helps cause mine is a 91
