Engine Ideas/Questions
Engine Ideas/Questions
I have a 89 rs thats ready for paint. The body is done. The car is without a motor. The engine compartment is empty. I want to what you guys think I should put in there for a motor. I would like to see 450-500 hp. I am willing to spend the money for the power but I am not sure what to put in there. I am leaning towards a 350. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. I just want a solid motor with some power. A good solid street motor. The only thing I have to work with is the stock tranny. I am also not sure if that tranny will hold up with that kind of power. If someone could give me pointers on that too I would appreciate it.
Does anyone think that an aftermarket tbi kit would work for what I am trying to get.
Thanks guys.

That is a lot of power. You can't expect stock 3rd gen drive train components to last long behind it.
Have you considered an LSx swap? Heads/cam/exhaust will get that kind of power, and do it in a driving-friendly way.

Re: Engine Ideas/Questions
I have thought about an LS1 motor. Would that be a good choice? Like one out of a 98 camaro? Is the market there for parts for those? Does anyone know if those will bolt in with the original mounts and such, or is there quite a bit of fabricating? I can get a ls1 with tranny from a friend of mine. Input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start by reading the LS1 swap sticky in the top section of this forum. Swap parts to f-bodies are readily available. Upgrade parts availability for LSx engines is approaching Gen I SBC quickly. You can get a good set of LSx heads for no more than Gen I SBC, that will out-flow and out-power Gen I with ease.
'99-'02 f-body is the more desired choice. The larger bore LQ4/LQ9 are becoming more popular as well (still need f-body accessories).
