Re: HELP 87 TRANS AM

GM never painted any SBCs green, and John Deere never used SBCs. The oil pan you need should be for any '75-'78 Camaro. If you want better info, clean the grunge off the block and get us the numbers. The casting number is at the left rear, the stamped info is at the right front.

I looked up the Casting number and it is a 1969-1979 block.

All you really need to know is that it is a 350, pre-87 so it is a 2pc RMS. What heads are on it, pull the valve cover and look for their casting #'s as well.

Re: HELP 87 TRANS AM

My books are showing that casting # to be a 2 bolt main block.

That block was used in both 2-bolt and 4-bolt configurations. About as common as dirt.

As in Torker intake? Hopefully not a Torker II.

Neither one is a very good street intake. Better to sell it and get something more street-friendly like a Performer.

Edelbrock makes good intake manifolds (when properly matched to the rest of the engine). There is absolutely no reason to assume you need to use an Edelbrock carb to "match" the intake.

Re: HELP 87 TRANS AM

keep the Q-jet very good carb, get either a performer or a RPM manifold, the single planes are good for straight line acceleration but not so good on the street. Unless you are constantly flooring it everywhere your car will be slower out of the light and feel slugish while just cruising, mileage is out the window as well. A dual plane manifold will always give you better driveability for a street car.

The Torker powerband starts at 2500 RPMs, and that's being generous. Flooring it doesn't help, it'll just slug it's way until it gets up to 2500 RPMs. Of course, if your torque converter stalls well above that, it'll get into the powerband quicker, but you'll always be reving it up to get moving if that's the case.

As stated, a Performer with a q-jet would be fine, assuming a mild cam.

Do you have any idea what cam is in it? While a Performer RPM is better than a Torker, most factory type cams are so mild even the RPM is more than what is needed.

Since you have a T5, a case could be made for going with a double pumper Holley type carb, probably something in the 600 CFM range. Other than that, the q-jet you have is a better choice than any other option.

Re: HELP 87 TRANS AM

I'd drop the RPM choice and just go with the performer manifold the stock cams don't like to hit anything above 5000 rpm.
