91 RS Auto Swap
Hey guys, had no-one else to turn to.....
I got a 91 RS Cam auto and am attempting a 350 swap and keeping the TBI. I just want some tires spinning and beef the horses up toward 500+ without damaging my original 700R4 tranny or the frame. I live in Mississippi so emissions and smog is really 0 toward me and everyone else. I want all the poewer I can get and maybe an ocassinal great mpg. Not all the time but here and there. I am going with cast since it is tried and true against allimunum. I dont want to get a big "tab" nut do a great overhaul. Also I want to dish out the Auto to a Manual Tranny but trying to keep my 700R4. I am cheap and know it but the better half lets me spend here and there. She ok with man, and I am with engine, so we ok with both as long as it don't cost an "arm and leg or house". hhahahahahaah Thanks so much for all and any input. Sorry this post so long.
THANK YOU

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
"350", "TBI", and "500+ HP" are probably not going to happen. There are aftermarket TBI systems that could probably support that power level, but doing it with a NA 350 is pretty much a pipe dream.
TH700's can be built to handle 500 HP. Figure on about $2k for the transmission (w/o torque converter). And about another $3k for the new rear end and driveshaft you'll be buying.

Re: 91 RS Auto Swap
We gonna gut the stock 350 and replace everything in engine with competition racing mods. I could switch over to a carb if needed also. How hard would it be to go with 5 or 6 speed manual?

If you bump up to a 3.75" stroke crank, that would be a plus.
TBI isn't a bad concept, but the factory execution wasn't the best, and the aftermarket didn't pick up the slack. A totally different TBI system, such as the Holley system, would be able to handle it.
500 HP isn't impossible, and it is arguably easier/cheaper with carb. But, driveability will suffer.
Have you considered an LS1-type swap? Heads/cam/exhaust/tune, you can get 500 flywheel HP and still maintain decent economy and driveability.

Re: 91 RS Auto Swap
stroke crank like a "stroker" which would be cool. Sorry kinda dumb on vehicles but smart on computer/electronics. hahahahah
Drivability issues?? like speed, power and handling. Want a smooth beast ride.
LS1 seems on the $$pricey$$ side with 2 kids and a 50k house bill.
I figure it out later when parts come up after taxes. I just wanna get a better and clearer path before diving into something that turns out too much of a hassle.
five7kid: You awesome and are very knowledgeable and I thank you for the help you did and letting me know different options.

Re: 91 RS Auto Swap
A 500hp SBC with supporting mods is going to cost about as much as a 400HP LS1 swap with related. Long term upkeep will be significantly cheaper for the LSx
Drivablility comes in with general temperament and driver feedback. Idle quality, weather, fuel type (seasonal), air temp etc all come into play with more aggressive engines. LSx control systems seem to deal with these the best
Speed and handling arent what you should have as a forefront mission unless its a full blown racecar. 98% of your driving is low throttle, low RPM cruising and if it's a bear to keep running for that, then you wont be happy with the car

I want my cam to be like one of the muscle cars from fast and furious 2. hit gas and whole car shakes with power but remove NOS though. Old School basically. YEA!!!

Well, if it's just the sound and look you're after, you can get that with a 350. But, TBI just isn't happy with old school muscle car cams. LSx can deal with it a little better. Carb is probably the easiest way to deal with it - it's just a royal pain to drive in stop & go traffic.
(My whole car sure shakes when I dump the clutch with the LS1/T56 with the stickies mounted out back.)

Re: 91 RS Auto Swap
ok we got that down,
how hard to swap to a manual stick shift? I see a [] marker? on left side of brake pedal where a clutch pedal would fit. Just wondering how much of a pain it would be to do it. Thanks
