Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

Why are you asking? Are you swapping engines? I'm confused because you don't have one on the side of your block now.

Do you currently have one on the side of the motor?

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

no i do not have one on side of the motor. i bought the iroc for $300. perfect condition, just missing a motor. so i did the interior swap, tail light mod, homemade halo headlights, everything. bought a engine and i does not have a fuel pump, i just didnt kno if the car needed one since i never had an engine in the car to look at and tell

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

Let me ask you this?

Are you Going Carberator or Fuel injection?

If your going carb you need a fuel pressure regulator to use the fuel pump in tank

If your going Fuel injection your fine with that one

Also what year of motor is yours?

87 and newer(Motor that had no fuel pump on motor from factory) Dont have a spot on camshaft to move the mechanical fuel pump to make it pump

If your going carb I would just get a fuel pressure regulator(you can get new @ jegs for like $25) and a jegs fuel pressure gauge(new for $20ish) and put on your inner fender well depending on carb you run 5-7 psi

I have noticed that my car runs best at 6.5 psi(I use a Holley Red Electric Fuel Pump it was $105)

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

If the in-tank fuel pump works, then you can use it, but you need a return-style regulator like the Mallory 4309 - if you pay less than $70 for the regulator, it's not a return-style - they are expensive. But that regulator will reduce your fuel pressure down to a level that the carb can use - your pump makes 40+ psi and a carb only needs 6psi.

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

whats the difference between a return style regulator and a non return style?

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

Return style reg regulates the pressure by sending the excess fuel back to the tank.

Non-return style just cuts the fuel off, backing it up in the line.

The in-tank fuel pump is set up as a return style pump - it's made to recirculate the excess fuel - this returning of the fuel keeps the pump running cool and makes the pump last longer. Since the in-tank pump was made to create so much pressure for the fuel injection system that was in the car, running a regular 'dead head' regulator will burn out the pump (because of the restriction). And I'm not sure that a regular regulator would be able to reduce the pressure enough anyway.

Re: fuel pump-do i need one?

Cheapest would be to drop the tank, assuming your doing your own work. Your labor is free. And unless you know the pump has already been replaced recently (last few years), then it's apt to die at anytime. So I'd drop the tank, and install a pickup, then run an external electric pump or a mechanical pump on the block. Then, you'll never have to drop the tank again.

so drop my tank, take out the electric fuel pump and install a mechanical one on my block?
