To Rebuild or swap...

I have an 87 IROCZ with a 5.7. I want the car to be fast so im looking at mid to high 12's. It is a auto sadly. It has 3;73 gears and exhaust. Otherwise bonestock. The car has never ran at 100% it always has had some minor problems such as dying and running rough at times. Here is what im thinking

Idea 1:
Camshaft
Heads
Intake
with a 350 Auto.
Even with this I feel car will not be as fast as I want it to be, and I dont want to have a high cam sound since I want it to be a sleeper.

Idea 2:
Buy a destroyed LS1 through a friend who repairs cars.
Take Motor,Trans (Manual), rear end (if possible) and wiring/computer and put into my car.
Cost and time will not have been worth it, but if its not will be well worth it for the down road.

Idea 3:
Buy a destroyed LT1 Corvette/Camaro/Transam and do the same as LS1 idea.
Same as Idea 2

I know an LS1 do not run stock 12s but they do run low 13s and I would later put cam head intake and Nos possibly.

Any suggestions?

Re: To Rebuild or swap...

I'd vote for the #2 option execpt with a variance; Search out a good used take out LS2 or LS3 with a manual trans. Try eBay or Craigslistings. Have seen the LS2 combinations (engine, trans w/ harnesses) go for as little as $4500+-. For that price you'd get a running combination that you can really build upon and consider that you'd spend close to that amount on building a good older Gen I motor. As for the LT option, those are simply Gen I updated motors, more commonly known as Gen II with an opti and revised short runner intake system. Good motors but again you'd have start the mod processes to garner the most of it's true potential. I've owned an LT1 Camaro and it was a nice, fast enough car but with the LS format and the aftermarket's embrace of it, that would be my choice for a swap.

Good luck

Re: To Rebuild or swap...

Are there any other decent fuel injected 350's we can put in our cars?

Your choices for 5.7 liter factory injected V8's are LO5 (trucks and full-size passenger cars), L98, LT1, L31, and LS1.

I wouldn't use the word "decent" about the LO5, or about the L31 injection system.

Id stay away from the LO5 unless you're doing a LO3 to LO5 swap or simply hunting a good 350 block to build up

Id go #2, 3rd gens are lighter and with a decent driver they usually hit 12's. Headers, stall and gears should net a potent swap that still has tons of room to grow. If you find any wrecks for $2000 or less feel free to PM me. Ill drive half across the country for that

Re: To Rebuild or swap...

Go with #2,.... you could always go with the lm7 5.3, and put a decent set of casting on it and cam it that would be a quick car. Or do what i did and buy a long block off craigslist ( i got mine for 350 with a bad crank ). GUARANTEED power ls1 family is a very horse power happy family. they love anything you throw at them pretty much. but ya

FWIW, I'm getting my LS1/4L60E into Berlinetta #1, hopefully will be running in 2 weeks. I took out a ZZ4 clone/TH700 with 2500 stall and 3.23 gears that ran mid-13's at sea level (drove it 700 miles to a divisional race last year, ran it, drove it home). The LS1 will get 3000 stall & 3.73 gears, long tube headers, and free-flowing air inlet. I expect it to easily take half a second off the ZZ4 ET, probably more like .75 to a full second off.

My other Berlinetta, #2, with LS1/T56, long tube headers, free flowing air inlet, and 4.10 gears, ran 13.3 at 5800' elevation (8500' density altitude) spinning the tires off the line and bogging. Unfortunately I found a poorly engineered combination of torque arm parts (my fault) before I could find the "sweet spot" with no bog.

The LS1 swap is a little more involved than, say, a Vortec/L31 TPI Stealth Ram swap, but, they sure are fun to drive. . .
