Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

Hi everyone! Not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes. My speedo, cruise, and TC lock up are INOP. Here's the story... (sorry if it gets long)

About a year ago, I bought 2 cars. An 89 Formula 350 with a NEW L98 and 700R4. The body and interior were junk, so I also bought my 87 GTA as a roller. It's nice... so I swapped the L98 and 700r4 from the Formula into the GTA. Now, I have the car running great and I drive it daily to work. I have this one last issue to tackle. I get a code 24.

Everything worked as advertised when the combo was in the Formula. I need to know how the system works, so I can troubleshoot. I'm a bit ignorant on this. I am trying to search, but there isn't much out there on this subject.

If I have a wiring diagram, I will start chasing wires with my voltmeter.

code 24 is vehicle speed sensor which is correspondent with your speedo, tcc lockup and cruise not working. Check the tranny speed sensor and wiring. you probably forgot to plug it in

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

No, it's plugged in. I checked for continuity between the VSS plug and VSS buffer. All is good there. I know that the code 24 is for VSS.

I just found out some wiring spec for the VSS and buffer. The pink wire on the buffer has 12v like it's supposed to. The ground is good as well. The output from the buffer goes to the ECM and speedo via the brown and green wires respectively. Now, is there a way to test the signal coming from these wires? What type of signal and value should be coming from these wires?

Thanks for the help!

The VSS wiring is cut in the engine bay. I found the wires, but need to rewire them into the VSS buffer. Does anyone know where these wires go into the car?

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

Ok, I fixed the VSS and buffer wiring. The speedometer works great, but the cruise control doesn't work and the TC does not lock up. So... I poked around some more. I looked at the brake switches under the dash. One is broken and the connector is hanging. It's the switch on the right. The connector has a pink/black stripe wire and a gray wire. I'm pretty sure this circuit and switch are part of the problem. Can anyone confirm this?

is it the one that has a large vacuum line attached to it? That is the switch for the cruise control, I believe the TCC is hooked to the regular brake light switch.

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

Well, the switch appears to be broken. The only thing left of it is the part that screws into the bracket. I see the electrical plug and the vacuum hose. I read a schematic that shows the tcc circuit wired with the cruise control release switch.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...ntrol-can.html

I suppose I could just buy a switch, but here's my problem. I have no money left to buy a new switch ($22) until the 15th. So, is there a way to bypass the switch and hopefully get my tc lock up back?

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

You could hard wire the TCC to lock up but without brake switch input it will not unlock when you come to a stop and your engine will stall.

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

yeah, i'm seriously considering hardwiring it with a switch for the next 2 weeks. I will buy a cruise control release switch for it after I get paid.

I will look up the hardwire procedures. thanks guys.

Re: Speedometer, TC lock up, cruise not working after engine swap

I wired a switch into A and F of the ALDL, but it doesn't lock up the torque convertor. I guess I will look at the wiring diagram again. Maybe the missing cruise control release switch has created an open in the circuit.
