MPFI V6 5spd to 350 Help

Hello everyone,

I am looking into switching out my V6 to a 350, not enough power blah blah blah, i originally replaced the V6 because i wanted gas mileage but now that i have noticed i really don't care about gas mileage why not upgrade?

The car is a 1989 MPFI 2.8 T-5

So here are my wondering's at the moment,

1. What transmission should i bolt to the 350 that will work? I believe i have a engine in line that is a carbed 350 out of a 79 Chevy. Although i am not sure if it is actually a 327, something i will be checking on next time i make it to my garage.

2. I am pretty sure i do, but to make sure, do i have to swap out the original Front springs or not?

3. What are going to be mt choices for wiring? this is my weak point, i hate wiring so i need the most simple fix as possible while still being reliable.

If i have any more questions which i am sure i will, i will post more. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

1. The last year for 327's was 1969, so if a '79 has a 327 in it, it wasn't put there by the factory.
2. You don't have to change the front springs, but my experience was with all-iron Gen I SBC, TH700, and AC, the V6 springs, although brand new replacements, allowed the suspension to bottom out in dips and over speed bumps. Others say the V6 springs work just fine. I actually put V6 springs in my 305 to LS1/T56 swap, and they work great.
3. If you are going to a non-computer carb (which, for the record, isn't street legal in an '89 chassis), the wires you will need will be part of the V6 harness. You will have to identify the ignition (coil) power, tach signal (also goes to the coil), alternator wires (may have to reroute and/or lengthen them for the V8), engine temperature gauge wire, starter wires (they are the same V6 or V8), and oil pressure gauge wire. If your carburetor has an electric choke, you'll need to route a switched 12v (power only when ignition in the "run" position) wire to the carb. Don't psych yourself out over wiring - it really is pretty straight forward.

Re: MPFI V6 5spd to 350 Help

The motor in the truck is surely not stock. My father thinks its a 327 but I don't. Good to know that the stock springs are not a need to do right away, Im sure i can get ahold of some down the road, the V6 springs are new at the moment.

Wiring is exactly what i thought as you said, just connect the basics and just clean up and hide the rest.

I am still wondering though what transmission to look for, with the torque bar it makes it difficult.

Re: MPFI V6 5spd to 350 Help

well, the trans depends on you power output. I swapped a 2.8 for a tpi 350, and im running a t-5 from a 305 tpi behind my l98 with headers, custom dual exhaust, 4.10 gears and some other stuff, and it seems to hold up fine. If you go this root, dont do horrfifc clutch dumps, and you may wont to hold off on posi, i run 245/50/16s and thats alright. Just an idea, you can use the v6 torque arm, clutch hydraulics, etc with a v8, just get the starter to work with a v8 t-5/bellhousing, a flywheel for a 10.4" clutch, make sure the flywheel is for pre 86 sbcs. if your 350 is. its not that complex
