What engine to choose?
Hi.
I have a plan on buying a used engine this winter. I have a 1987 Camaro with a 305 TPI engine which is going to be swaped in to either an L98, LT1 or LS1.
I have a little workshop so I have access to some engine machining.
Therefor I want to buy a used engine and disassemble everything and build the engine up from bare block.
What I want from you is actually pros and cons on those engine I mentioned.
mayby that would help me out a little bit.
I know the L98 would be a nice swap since I already have the wiring for a TPI system. What about the LT1?...Isn't that also a engine which is easy to swap in our cars???
And the LS1 is the best of course, but then again, money is a serious thing

I'd think the question is what your budget is, in U.S. dollars, after correcting for the exchange rate, and figuring the shipping.
For around $2700, you could get the 12530283 long block assembly from GMPP, and add the S-D TPI Vortec base.
Figure the balance of a $3,000 investment for injectors and an AFPR.
Have you already upgraded the entire exhaust system? If not, figure another $1,000 for the good stuff.
Have you installed a performance axle ratio yet? If you can't do all of this, and haven't done any of it, then let the 350 wait until you do the gears and exhaust.

My question is more like what engine is best to be used on a street car for reasonable price.
I mean: will buying a LT1 or LS1 cost a lot more than modifying a L98??
I just want to hear people's opinion on those 3 engines.
I think I might go for the L98 since my Camaro already have a lot of performance upgrades that can be reused on the L98.
I have installed the following items on my 305:
High lift Cam from COMP camshafts (could be used on both 305 and 350)
Hooker 2055 HKR headers with a 3" catback system
Catco 9118 High flow catalytic converter.
Ported heads
Eaton POSI differential with YUKON 3.43 gears
700R4 which is overhauled and can handle about 500HP
So. Wouldn't buying a L98 engine and rebuild that engine with some of my performance parts be a good choice?
mayby burn a modified chip. I have burning equipment so I have done a little bit of Eprom burning

Re: What engine to choose?
Instead of farting around with a used block, I would get a new L31 shortblock:
