motor mounts?

Im putting a 79 350 into a 92 firebird and i cant get the motor mounts to line up i can get one side in but not the other. There was a 70 350 in before so im pretty sure the mounts on the car are right. There is a spacer on one side motor mount on my motor. Is that supposed to be there if so is there a certain side its supposed to be on because i took the motor mounts off and i thought i put them back on right. Or what else could it be?

Re: motor mounts?

That's not stock. Try finding a new set of thirdgen V8 engine-side mounts. I'd suspect that someone just used whatever was hanging off the engine when they put it in.

Re: motor mounts?

i'm swapping a 400 C.I.D. SBC into a 1983 camaro, it currently has a 4-cylinder in it. Will the 400 fit in the engine bay without a cowl hood? and will i have to reposition motor mounts?

Re: motor mounts?

A 400 is the same size as any other SBC. I don't know what mount arrangement the L4 uses, but you should probably count on having to move them.

Re: motor mounts?

The 4cylinder mounts are definitely different. You can apparently get v8 motor mounts at autozone fore like 8 bucks a piece.

That's probably the rubber frame-side mount, the block-side will probably have to come from a junkyard.

The 400 is the same size as any other SBC... if another SBC built the same way fits without a cowl, then yours will fit without a cowl... if you put too tall an intake/carb/air cleaner on it, you'll need a cowl.

Re: motor mounts?

i got one side in and the other i got the bolt halfway in but having a pain in the *** lineing up the last hole. It has firebird v8 mounts on the motor and solid mounts on the frame. tomorrow im gonna put it on the hoist and bolt the trans to the motor Any clues as to why its being so hard to line up?

Re: motor mounts?

almost got the trans bolted to the motor couldnt find the last few bolts i needed. so ill finish that up tomorrow but i still couldn't get the one bolt all the way through it seemed a little closer but it just might be my wishful thinking. Any suggestions? its almost as if the motor and trans need to shift to the passenger side a bit. Would starting the motor and putting it in gear help at all you think?

Re: motor mounts?

I had issues getting my last motor to fall in just right. It helps a LOT to have a load leveler so you can adjust back to front, left to right, etc. I ended up bolting the upper and lower mount pieces to the motor and then putting in upper k-member bolts. It can be frustrating, but it'll eventually come together with a bit o patience, creativity, and a pry bar or two.
