The good:
-Fired right up 1 crank, smooth as can be

The bad:
- I stripped the bottom radiator transmission line, I tried to fix but its past that point. So i guess my only option now is to buy a small trans cooler and pray i have enough room to atleast run it vertically on the front of the trans next to my secondary fan. Figured this would be the cheapest option
- Secondary fan has no power, not sure if the main fan has power as the car wasnt running that long. So need to investigate
- Used the regulator that came with the Fuel pump, Lowest i can get it to is 8 pounds. I switched my autometer FPG to a little Mr Gaskets that just screws on the rail, I might hook up my autometer just too see if it reads the same. Not sure if i can get away with 8 pounds or not, herd 7 which is where the firebird sat.

Am uploading a video, there was no sound on the phone, but if i can get sound on the comp ill show you
How did you wire up the secondary fan? Usually it is turned on by a switch in the pass side head.
The switch flips to ground, if you take the wire going to the switch and ground it, it will tell you if the fan is powered.

Not sure of the fuel pressure issue.

Is there any way to fix the threads on the rad? If I am not mistaken, you bought an all aluminum rad, weld a new bung adapter on it. You may fall short on cooling capaicity without the factory rad, unless you have a very big trans cooler. Just to be safe.

Not understanding this lol

i have a relay that controls the motor side fan, comes on around 170. Secondary fan behind the radiator is hooked up to a switch. I went off a switch the previous owner had hooked up to his fan, he said it worked but IDK. Ill look into it after all other issues are delt with.

Yes aluminum, in order to do that i need to take Rad out and bring it to a shop, was kinda hoping a trans cooler would suffice and i could bypass it. But again, am here for options.

Thats why I asked, I could have been more clear I suppose. But anyway, you have it rigged different anyway. You'll have to test for power at the switch.

Can't say, but better to have both anyway, get the external one hooked up, if you need to get the car moving, and than take the rad in for repair later on.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

You'll get it figured out. I have no doubt. What duration cam are you running?

Ah never mind....I just saw...234/236....that'll be a good balance of idle quality, driveability, and power. Should be a great runner!

What volume runners and combustion chambers in your heads? Just curious.

Lloyd Elliott recommended a 244/254 for my engine, since I'm running 12.4ish:1 compression. The heads will have 205cc runners. I'll need a good dynamic compression ratio for this darn thing. It's gonna have a nasty idle, but oh well. I'll get used to it.

Here's a link to my 383 swap thread, if you're interested

Can't wait to see and hear your engine running!

NO, i installed the trans cooler yesterday, just need to cut back the trans line on the frame rail and put the hose on them, then bolt the exhaust, then she's ready.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

finished up today, was worried about the 8 pounds before i went out for a cruise so i took a piece of rubber, put over the feed line into the regulator and put a hose clamp on it. Tightened it up untill it read 7 psi. Good to Go Right! NO!!!!!!!

Goto the back of the car to tighten the lug nuts and drop the rear when i smell gas. Looked at the ground and see 3 puddles. 2 of them were from bleading the brakes, third one was a mystery. So i tell the wife to turn the fuel pump on and walla, leaking out of the top, and leaking out of the bottom. Well maybe not a leak, more like a river.

Tomorrow i will be pulling the Mallory regulator out of the bird and installing on the camaro seeing i have to return the regulator with the pump together. I cant get a break.

Was it leaking out the fuel lines or the pump it self?

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

bottom of the pump. Theres 5 bolts on the bottom cover, leaking out the whole back side of the pump. Could be why i couldnt regulate the pressure? seeing i had troiuble with that one regardless ill use the mallory thats already set for 7 pounds

And yes i tried to tighten, didnt work, almost like the factory didnt put a gasket on it

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Yaaaaaaa Buddy

Changed the fuel pump, sounds much healthier and doesnt leak Got my fans situated. Took a ride probably 10 minutes away, car had good power. Decided to check the plugs make sure there not on the header and sure as **** 2 were not clicked in. OOPS, drove it home and had ALOT more power

Cae diesels on shut off after driving for 30 minutes, taking it to a known good tuner this week, got my buddys car from 14.5 to 13.0. Then when i get to the dyyno it shouldnt cost alot to final tune. Ill take a ride tomorrow with the wifey and get you guys some videos.

Not sure if its the car or the trans cooler in front of the radiator but am running at 200-210. Not pleased about that seeing the bird was at 170 after i finished the voltage issue. Camaros volts are running at 13. Not sure if thats acceptable. My yellow top battery drained about 3 times since the firebird...

Think it would help if i put a fan or 2 in front of the trans cooler? Maybe a PC core fan, 10 inch or so? I thought the camaro would have been better seeing the front nose has room for the air to come through rather then the firebird

Forgot to mention, Soooooo Nice to cruise at 2k with no vibrations :P Heres a starter video, stop watching at 13 seconds, wife didnt stop video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYVeTTpk5sM

Traction is alot better, amazing what good tires can do lol I can also hold first gear unlike the B@m shifter i had, i think that shifter is screwed, Reverse lockout didnt work on it either.....So now i need to figure out what shifter i want

Good to hear that you got it going. Kind of weird that both the Voltage and cooling is a little off since the swap? Is the belt slipping?

The Camaro does have better airflow to the rad.... so you need to find out why the same setup is running hotter.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Well is 13 off? Herd those batterys need trickle charge once they go dead. I just through it on the van and charged it for an hour. Cars been starting for 3 days now... trans cooler is 9'' x 11 3/4, and of course blocks 1 fan. I also have ALOT more space from radiator to the frame then i did the bird causing air to come around the radiator. Maybe cut the top back, or somehow figure out how the block the sides off? Wierd though because putting the radiator in the camaro i had more room then the firbird it seemed.

If you need a picture to see let me know

Mine never really charges past 13... Battery has been okay and alternator is new. Can't say the same for you. I like to see 14 , but both my alternators charged at this voltage.
I think the sides need to blocked off, tape in some cardboard to test it out, will most likely make the difference!

I didn't hear any 6500 rpm pulls on the vid. lol

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Good News bad news. Like always

The good:

-Re-wired Secondary fan to the relay box so its getting juice straight from the battery. Sounds healthier and car doesnt go above 210 ( still high for me ), Am going to build a bracket and mount the trans cooler about 5 inches away from radiator to see if it works. Now to figure out how to cut the ties
- No i dont have a video sorry! Gbay ill hook one up in my car like yours one of these days lol
- Ran my buddys camaro tonight. His car weighed in at 2950, ran 12.8@110. Initial hit i put about a full fender on him, then started walking him very slowly. Not very happy about the outcome as i thought it would have been much better. Hoping after the Tune it will be a different story
- Just picked up a White faced autometer Monster Tach, if weather permits ill hook up tomorrow and show some pics
- From the looks of it, car will be tuned this week coming. Spoke to the guy on friday. We shall see

The bad

- Getting a weird rattle noise from front tire area i think, ( sounds like an exhaust hanger that was not put on tight and just rattles). Seems if am on the brakes hard it goes away. I took the tire off and checked the brake pads and rotor, pads seemed tight, looked new, same with rotors. Rattle was not there when i test drove the car. Am stumped. The exhaust however is rubbing alittle on the k member between the oil pan in 1 spot very little. But its not whats making the noise. Thinking maybe that meltal bracket that holds the brake shoe in, or the just caliper. I have to look into it more.
-Broke down racing LOL When i bought the serp setup the belt was frayed alittle on the outside. Guess today while racing it gave up. I thought i really screwed something up because it didnt sound good hitting the undercarriage lol. Luckly 1/2 came off, i was able to drive 3 miles home on 1/2 a belt. My idler pulley doesnt seem to be alighned with the ac delete or the alternator. Ill buy a new one and go from there with that issue.
- I dont like the 4:11 gears. Actually i hate them. Ill be lucky if i can make it through the traps with gear left! for some reason 3rd goes by ALOT quicker in the camaro then the firebird. But seriously, time to look for my rear with 3:73's

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Love this hood! if i could get one thats 2 1/2 or 3 inch this style ill deal with a non bolt on hood. Buddy picked this car up for 1k, same kid i just raced. Clean car! Didnt race this car, but he bought this to put the motor in

My buddys brothers car. Just put these Z06 rims powder coated black. Look Sweet, 295-30 or 35 x 17. Using 4'' backspacers, not to keen on that with power, but they dont come out of the fender lip. Look nice too

Maybe if i come into money i can have 2 sets of wheels :P the back shot looks like they stick out alot, but there just about even with the fender

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Just found out:

Buddy was in 1st gear on our race compared to me being around 2500 in second, and having little spin. I feel dissapointed, maybe if someone chimes in and says " he was at his powerband, and you werent even close" i might feel better lol He also has a T5 and is a pro shifter. I just thought i would pull from a 110mph car faster then i did

Your making some good progress, dont sweat on the small details.

I think you can cut the female end of the ties very close to its base to shear of the 'hold'.

Try spinning the tire in the air and have a listen, I dont htink the anti rattle clips can make that type of loud noise, but if you have them off, squirt some disk brake quite on the shims.

4:11's are high for street, but i think you engine can handle 6500+ rpm easliy.

You need to take it to the track!

Edit** i dont know how to multi quote in one post

He had a huge advantage being in first, no question. Street racing proves nothing! take it to the track!
I would be happy pulling on a 110mph car, a good 110 car can run easy mid 12's with a good 60ft.

You'll be knocking on 11's once you have it setup.

New toy i got for free, going to go fix installing it now and lighting it up

Rattling fix, when i disconnected the e brake on the stock rear i took the cable off from under the drivers back seat. Well it was bouncing off the driveshaft

So Heading out now to try and break the ties that hold the tranny cooler on the radiator and get it away and see if that helps. Took it for a first highway run today and she creeps to 230, i need to put her in nuetral and coast for awhile before it comes back down. Praying trans cooler is too close

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Good and Bad again.

Start with Bad.
-Let my father take the car out alone for the first time, i get a phone call 5 minutes later that he's sitting in the parking lot because the car was up toward 235...
- Inline fuse box for the fan relay came loose so the fan was not working
- Just noticed small leak in the heater core

The Good

-Uploading 2 short videos of my father driving. Told him what i wanted but he admits he's alittle scared of the car until he gets used to it ( first time really driving it ). So when i post the 2 links he told me it was about 3/4 or less throttle only 5500 or so rpm's. I have my shift light set to 6000 and it didnt come on.
-Bought a new inline fuse box for the fan relay, re-wired all the connections for the fans so nothing can ever come loose now. Tach is complete, and lights on the dimmer.

Very nice, sounds like she wants to go!

Aside from the fan wire, I am surprised she wants to heat up? Is the system topped up, water flowing good?

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Are you still running a stock water pump? My el cheapo aluminum water pump from summit keeps mine plenty cool with all the rest of the components being stock. I could go for a 20* cooler T-stat, and earlier fan turn-on temps, but why fix whats not broken? it doesn't run any hotter than the 305 did.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Running Gm's High volume, or there performance pump, forget, only know it cost me $120, was the most exspensive one parts store had. Its not the pump as the firebird ran 170ish after i fixed the charging system.

Am hoping it was the connections on the inline fuse box for the fan relay. Unfortunatly the car is having a hard time staying running at the moment, my friend had the timing set to get me by, but got rushed out and forgot to tight the distributor. So back to square one lol

Am biting the bullet i think, off to change the friggen heater core now

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

After screwing with the heater core for and hour and half i decided to give up for the day in discust. Go to move my car and notice a big oil puddle. New oil pan gasket i put on is leaking worse then the old one.

As of now, my patience with the car has worn off. Tired working my regular 50 hour work weeks and working on the car till 11 at night for the past month and a half and getting nothing accomplished.

She shall sit for a few months until i can get my savings up again, i will be doing some research about speed shops around my area and get pricing. Tired turning a wrench on this thing.

Take a break!
In a week or so, you will be back at. I feel the same way, and I stopped looking at it, I even put the dust cover over it so as not to have it wink at me when I walk by it.

Keep us posted.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

Ok, so having someone do it is out of the question. If it is the oil pan there saying about 1k to pull the motor and fix it. If it leaks again they will cover the cost and fix it again. at $95 an hour ill deal without driving it and working the problem out the next couple months

Not sure if its the pan gasket or if its the bull**** chrome timing cover, all i know is theres oil sitting on the bottom lip of the harmonic balancer and bottom of timing cover.

Am calling the insurance company today and pulling it off the road. Am gonna dolly it back up to NY So i can get 2 mechanics working on it for me. My uncle is on disability for awhile so he can work on it here and there.

Am planning on it being off the road until spring. Heres whats gonna get done

-Oil leak
-New trans lines ( leaking )
-Fabricate a bracket and relocate the trans cooler, Most likely install A bigger one
-New heater core
- Nitrouse System
- Figure out what shifter to use ( not liking B@M megashifter )
-All Body work ( already have all the sandpaper, etc etc to finish the car besides paint )

So to be continued

Was your car at the raceway gas station a year or 2 ago? I remembered a black TA sounded like a turbo play around with me when i owned my bike lol

Thanks for the offer, i would have taken you up on it if i didnt see the oil puddle when i moved it. At this point, heater core is least of my issues.

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

I was racing everything back then lol. Had the T-76 turbo on the 305 and I got it down to 11.50's @ 117 with about eight pounds of boost, and there was so much left in it back then. Took it out to Route 37 in Toms River one night to do a little street racing and it wound up lifting a head, w/the gasket being completely annihilated. It was a long way back to Old Bridge lol. Now she's running a T-88 w/Cometic gaskets, so the rods now become the weakest link, and hopefully are up to the task. Seriously though, if you need any help let me know....

Re: Finally! My 383 swap

After going back and forth on a certain decision i made my mind up.

Bypassing heater core today, putting interior back together, picking up a bolt on fiberglass daytona hood ( temp hood ), And picking up the 3 line ET Radials, possibly some skinnies, and heading to the track on Wensday for her first pass before teardown.

To be updated on wensday. Figured something is going to break, so i will bring an extra torque arm and driveshaft with me Depending on the times she runs, am leaving at idle, if am disappointed, am leaving off 3k and seeing what i break.

My guess is mid 12's at 113-115ish.

Carb needs tuning, and smaller jets.

You know lethal i had a dream the other day about some turbos under my hood Did you build your car yourself or have someone do it? Acouple of people are saying my motor is around 10-10:5:1 compression. Am sure i could squeeze a few PSI out of it with race fuel, or just change the heads. Decisions decisions

How much is raceway these days, last time i went down the track was back in 2006, cost 20$
