1985 Camaro - Had a v6 - in the process of swapping to a SB350
1985 Camaro - Had a v6 - in the process of swapping to a SB350
Alright, I have a 1985 Camaro - It was a 5 speed manual with a v6.
I purchased a 350 that was from a Chevy box truck, the engine was built to a 355. I placed the engine in, everything is wired up correctly and the car starts up and runs....kind of.
Now the issue I ran into was as follows.
The engine mount bracket isn't correct, it is the same one that was used to mount to the chevy box truck. Which engine mount bracket would I need to use to make the motor fit in properly so it can be bolted down into the holes?
I searched online but found a few different types so now I am unsure as to what I need. My mechanic said I just need a V8 Camaro engine mount bracket.
When I said that the car kind of runs I meant that it only allows me to go into first or second gear. The transmission prolly isn't set properly because the engine isn't in the right place due to incorrect brackets.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
These are the different kinds of brackets I found. Heres a link to one of them, I couldn't save and upload this one, and then I have attached files to 3 other kinds.

The engine-side mounts you need look like the rightmost ones you posted. They're thirdgen-specific, and the left and right sides are slightly different from each other.
You moved the frame-side mounts to the right holes in the K member, right?

We attached the brackets that were already on the 350 engine onto the camaro engine mounts but when we tried attaching it to the vehicle it didn't sit proper, seem to be 1 and half inches over to the passenger side and the holes wouldn't line up.
So thats why I was looking at brackets becasue it does seem that the current ones on the motor are incorrect.
I guess I will take a picture tomorrow and post it and let you see.

Lower ones?
I got a pair of engine mounts from autozone for a v8 camaro. Looks like the ones in the pictures I attached.
We were able to mount those onto the current brackets on the 350 without any issue. But when we tried aligning it, it didn't sit proper. Which is what led me to think that the original brackets on the engine from the box truck wouldn't do the trick.
Now from the diagram I saw at advanced auto, there were 2 engine brackets (the stuff from my first post that I am not sure of the correct ones) and a transmission mount along with the 2 engine mounts - one for each side no difference in them (aka the picture attached).
I didn't see any lower engine mounts? My engine is currently sitting too far forward.
I guess I'll be able to get more answers tomorrow once I can show you a picture of my engine bay and how its sitting.
It's my first time doing an engine swap and starting off with a v6 to a 350 sure is annoying. So many little things you need, I am kind of regretting not having gone with a v8 to begin with.
But the body on the car only had 20k miles on it, black with black leather interior and is in Immaculate condition. So I wa a sucker and fell in love with it, the engine was aready removed from the vehicle and this was just set inside. So now I have a hell of a job ahead of me it seems. At least I got it to run and hear it roar, just need to get everything properly set up though

The picture you attached in the above post is the mount I am talking about. When you get a pic up, we'll be able to tell if its in the correct position or not.

Wasn't able to get the picture yet, but I believe I did figure out what was wrong.
The person I bought the engine from had the mounts attached to the engine backwards along with using the wrong set of brackets.
I bought new brakcets and mounts anyways though. Going to pull the engine out, use my new mounts and brackets and it should al go perfectly...in theory lol. Hopefully i'm successful and then i'll post pictures =)

Re: 1985 Camaro - Had a v6 - in the process of swapping to a SB350
You need to get (if you havn't already), the upper and lower engine mounts for a chevy camaro with a 305. So where ever you get them from, say you need the upper motor mount (clam shell), and lower moter mounts for a chevy camaro with a 305. You can say 350 to, it doesn't matter, its just they didn't have 350's in 85 yet. The mounts for the v6's motor mounts on your frame (k member) are further towards the back of the car then the holes you need to use for the V8's. So your motor mounts will now be in a differnt spot on the kmember, further to the front of the car. You will have to move your brake line, just bend it (carefully) and make it run along the kmember where it seems to make sense, just reuse the line holders and bolt the line into the holes that are in the kmember for the line holders. Also, when you are putting the engine back in, be aware of the distributer, if its a big cap hei with the coil on top of the distributer, you will probly have to take the cap of so it doesn't hit the firewall as you tilting the engine into place, because the engine will be alot closser to the firewall. You dont want to crack the cap on the distributer by accident. For all the other stuff like exhausst and stuff, it will be much much easier and better if you get parts made for the V8 cars. Unless you really love to weld and fabricate.

Re: 1985 Camaro - Had a v6 - in the process of swapping to a SB350
Years ago I changed to carbed 350 from the stock 305 TPI. Straightforward swap except that the engine had a definite tilt with the passenger side being noticably lower (3/16's) than the right.
Two different part numbers on the mounts (that attach to the engine) so I assumed that I just had them reversed. (I had never tagged them left and right during the disassembly)
Now, with the change over to a new chassis, I've sorted through my parts bin and found original engine mounts from an 82 Z28. The part numbers (stamped on the mounts) are identical however there is a triangular spacer (3/16's) that fits between the engine and the mount.
Any insight? I'm guessing GM changed the mount design to eliminate the extra part as no members here have never seen the spacer before.
I'll be setting the engine in place today and will try with and without the spacer to see what the results are.
