Large Cap HEI Question

I'm sure someone here knows, as there is a great wealth of info here. I tried the search feature but got nothing using my key words. I did a TBI swap into an older vehicle with the system from a '95 truck. I have a new GM HEI from Jegs on my 350 that has maybe 3000 miles on it. Is it possible to run the large cap HEI with the 16197427 PCM/TBI setup off the '95? I think I read somewhere that it was possible, using the tach wire as a triggering device. Does this sound right? How would this be wired, if possible. My truck runs a manual tranny, so i removed the tranny wiring from the harness. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al

Re: Large Cap HEI Question

I don't see why not. Depending on the module it can be computer controlled but for your application, it normally isn't.

The best thing about the large cap HEI is that it's completely self contained. You provide a full switched voltage to the cap and it will run fine. You can pull a tach signal from it if you need to and I assume the ECM may need that to control the injectors.

You'll need a manifold vacuum source to operate the vacuum advance.

Re: Large Cap HEI Question

You want to use a non-computer HEI with the TBI computer?

Re: Large Cap HEI Question

Sorry Guys, its been a busy week. Apeiron, yes that"s what I'm asking. I think the modual is bad in the '95 dist, and I have a new GM large cap that I was running B4 I went TBI. I had it running off a laptop/Autoprom for a few times, then nothing. I can relate to springs/weights better than this new comp controled stuff. Figured I could dial in the fuel, then later move to the dist. This is for a wkend putter/ trail riding vehicle, not a racer. Motor is basically stock with a mild Comp cam, Edelbrock EPS man w/adapter plate for TBI unit, and headers. Many thanks for your interest, how would I wire this? Al

I don't know how much you like fussing with stuff, but if you need a different distributor, you might want to look at this thread from the FAQ forum. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...stributor.html
