i kno vortec heads are good but i just want to learn what are some other good stock chevy heads. dumble hump heads are good i kno also but ive heard there are a few truck castings that get good power and what kind of heads where on the performance cars back in the day? i never hear about people using lt1 heads those motors made good power so it seems like they would work good

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

Not to familar withthe old school heads but the Iron L98 heads are decent for a factory Iron head and will respond well to clean up/porting.

Another good head is the 113 castings..aluminum vette L98 heads. Great for a 350 with 58cc chambers and with some clean up work/porting they can make some decent power.

The TPI 083 heads aren't too bad. Flow better than the 113 heads. Either one will benefit from basic porting/clean-up.

About the only factory 350 heads you should consider are the 062 or 906 "Vortec" heads from '96-'99 trucks. They require a specific intake manifold, but they are readily available.

Putting LT1 heads on a Gen I block is an exercise in how stupid you can be.

Maybe so but once you have them rebuilt and cleaned up may have more $$$ in them than a set of Vortecs or cheap alum that flow better out of the box

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

First we need to know what you will be doing with the heads- For each engine there are different requirements. You can put 416 casting (305) heads on a 350 vortec shortblock for low to mid rpm use, to save money on self aligning rocker arms and the cost of vortec heads.

Has been done but requires plugging and re-drilling the coolant
passages in the head face because of reverse coolant flow on GEN II heads.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...115-post6.html
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...777-post5.html

Then you have to work out how to get coolant out because LT1's have no coolant to intake like reg SBC

Vortecs are virtually same ports as alum LT1 which is why no body goes to trouble of converting LT1 heads

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

305 heads gain compression but give up valve size i believe which would hurt flow. DOnt they run a 1.8x" valve compared to the 350's 1.94? I'd go larger valve on the big 4" bore of the 350. Depending on the rpm range you are going for, large valves can help on a 350 bore size.

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

You can put 1.94/1.60 valves into a 305 head. I had a set of 601 castings done like that. They worked quite well on my 350, but it had quite a high CR, and needed a fairly big cam to make it tolerate pump gas. Cam was an XE274.

i have a set of 601 castings they was reworked fairly recently. i heard they flow some decent numbers see right now there a 305 tbi in it with only 55,000 but it has alot of sludge in it causin problems so im debatin on fixin the 305 and puttin them heads and a cam or puttin a 350 in but the deal i was gonna get on a 350 didnt go through my buddie sold it but whatevr i put i want it 2 haul but it aint gotta race ya kno i mean a s10 blazer out ran me the other day cant have that haha. oh and by the way cant afford no aluminium heads for sure unless i get a deal on em used and what is the combustion chamber size on a 305 and a 350 and what do u gotta do to the 305 heads to fit the bigger valves is it worth doin if they goin on a 305?

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

Chamber size depends on which heads. The typical 305 castings are 53cc or 58cc. Typical factory 350 heads can range from 58cc to 80cc.

Machine shop can cut the valve seats for larger valves.

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

I'd go with Vortec heads without any hesitation. I had a set of 1.8? intakes with 58cc chambers and it was fun but the best case scenario was about 285 horses and maybe 350 ft lbs. I'm sure it was capable of high 13's with somebody better behind the wheel. It was my first stick car that I raced, ran a 14.6 without 2nd gear in a T5.

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

alright i preciate all the advice i think im just gonna basically redo the top end on my motor get rid of them swirl port heads and put the other 305 heads i got on it might port em aint decided and a big cam new lifters wit roller rockers and a rpm intake wit a 650 carb should be a bad lil 305 after that. one more question tho i dont kno if mine got the roller lifters or not and i really and wantin to spend the money on the roller cam and lifters so if it is roller could i just put flat tappet lifters and cam in it or does any1 kno a affordable cam and lifters for it

If the car came with a roller cam, then all you need is a bigger roller cam and tuning, not a flat tappet cam. You could find someone here who has a 305 and get all of the roller cam stuff from them. My .02

Do you think he might want new valve springs too?

OP you may want to set aside a good $20 for a FULL keyboard with all the keys on it so people can read what you are typing.

I am reading what he is writing- some of what he is saying isn't adding up. If he has a roller setup, a roller cam off ebay is $85 new (191*I, 196*E at .050), and he could reuse all of the roller hardware he has now. He will have the 305 heads rebuilt(see above) so with that come new springs (I hope ).

or hopefully obamas socialized health care will go through so u can go to the eye doctor. i kno what im doin with the heads not my 1st rodeo just aint never messed with this roller cam and fuel injection stuff and im kinna thinkin a 80 dollar cam aint gonna be hittin on much. a comp roller cam and lifters cause i need new lifters is 300 plus dollars where as a good flat tappet set isnt much more than 100 plus with that it will have the lobe for a mechanical fuel pump

My eyes are fine I only know English though.

I have to say it is ironic using "wit" for "with" repeatedly.

The power you will be making it's not really worth the cost to convert to roller if your block isn't already.

yea but you kno what it mean i just had to give u hard time back man but see idk if its roller or not i read on here some tbi motors are some arent but its my dd so i gotta have my parts together before i tear it apart so i was just going to order the flat tappet cam and lifter set if it will still work even if its got roller lifters cause i really dont see the power gains being worth the money and i kno i got at least 1 bad lifter

601's are a great base to start with IMO. A performance valve job and bigger valves (1.94i, 1.5e) with a basic bowl blend would be an ideal start.

If you want to go "all out" cut them for LS1 valves (2.0i, 1.55e), install 8mm guide sleeves, port them to 180cc removing metal from the correct places, and cut the proper CSA for the application. Use Z06 beehive springs, retainers and locks. Full roller rockers. Clearance the block for the intake valves.

The cam I'm using is XE268 its 224/230 @ .05 (268/280 @ .006). It should bring peak power in around 6000RPM with the right combo.

ok i think i need to be looking at some smaller cams then cause this motor im working on in my truck haha but still the only reson im doin this is to make it faster and sound mean plus the thrill of doing it ya kno. whats this about a bowl blend? have a link? i read a post on here about gasket matching the ports i get how to do that. let me say this i want this truck to get up and go but it wont be pulling high rpms id prolli be happy getting 250 out of it but the more the better right 300 would be great but i think it would make that 305 suck to drive daily

Re: what are some good stock 350 heads

I went through some pictures I took before and after I blended the ridge made by the bowl cutter and found a good match of the same bowl. It's not perfect but you get the idea.

The factory ridge is a bit different but handled the same none the less. It's not mass removal just blend ridge into the bowl on intake and exhaust.

good stock, modern "350" heads you ask?

...get some 243's!

but seriously, a buddy of mine is running 416s with a xe256 and a full hooker exhaust. sounds pretty good for a 305.
