After plenty of time under the hood, feel that maybe it is time to rebuild/swap.

I bought the car used, 165K from the previous owner(s). Car was in pretty decent shape but it does have a few issues with the idle, runs horribly unless hot and at this point it stalls when it reaches operating temp. I don't have another vehicle so my only option is to buy my sisters Cobalt which she left behind with $8,500 worth of payments left when she moved to Sicily last week. Or get this one fixed which is completely breaking our ***** at this point, mine especially because I will rely on it again for work and college once someone else buys the Cobalt.

Budget is a few grand, wanted to see what I'd be looking at as far as $ for a rebuild on a 305. Thanks.

Nothing you describe would necessarily be resolved by a rebuild or swap.

Find out what's wrong first.

Didn't feel like getting into a long description on why I am considering it, was really just looking for an idea on how much I'd spend.

Well, it depends on what level of rebuild is required. A simple ring and bearing replace could be done for a few hundred. Add boring the block, turning the crank, valve job, you're probably looking at around $1000. If the valve guides are shot, add another couple hundred. Other little things like valve springs, rockers, pushrods, will push it up some more.

This guy http://www.precisionengine.com/rebui...gmc/index.html sells a rebuilt roller lifter 305 for $1300 (plus freight, of course). I've never done business with them, nor know anyone who has, but that's about a typical price for a rebuilt engine.
