Turbo'd sbc

Hey guys, iv decided to retire my old 305 and wanted to build a new 350 or 355. Then my brother put his two cents in. I thought id do a bit of research starting here. I would like any and all help i can get, comments concerns what to do or what not to do. Why it would be a great idea or a dumb one. Anything at all will help.

Thanks guys!

Re: Turbo'd sbc

You want good exhaust flow, so stay away from Vortec heads. You won't want to run a high compression motor and you'll probably want moly or steel rings. I can't be of much help but someone can correct me.

...Vortec heads are excellent and should NEVER be avoided if you want power on the cheap. The exhaust ports have no flow problem, the issue is that they cant keep up with the intake ports which have excellent numbers. This can be rectified with 1.6 exh valves.

Re: Turbo'd sbc

As I understand, the Thumpr cams get their "thump" from a narrow lobe seperation,in otherwords LOTS of overlap, not a good choice for forced induction.
I have personally never done much with turbos, mostly out of fear.I have seen several people have great success with them.I've seen several others create some enormous piles of broken parts.
I think turbos today are much like nitrous was 30 years ago, people don't get a good understanding of how to tune it,and end up with catastrophic results.
There are several here with turbo combos, seek out their wisdom, and you will end up with a great combo.

Alright thanks, Im not looking to put tons of boost just some, it will be for the most part a everyday driver. Yes i am aware of the heavy overlap, but id hate to see a camshaft go to waste :/ i didnt think it would be so much as a great idea but, what would happen if i did use it?

Re: Turbo'd sbc

ok cypris09 im a pro engine builder and have been useing turbos for a long time. im currently build a twin turbo 408 sbc. thats going to see over 30 psi of boost. 1st thing is to keep you compression ratio 9.1 or under i would play it safe and go 8.5:1. you probley looking for about 7-10 of boost. probley single turbo. that pretty respectable. i recomend a after market 23 degree head for what your wanting. racing head service, has some nice castings stay away from there pro lightning heads. and go fro the pro action stuff. the next thing is to make sure your using a steel rotating assembly. i also use forged pistons. you see im a durability builder i like my engines to take a beating and stay together. Your exhaust is a small playin factor how ever you do want it to flow well. i would also consider cutouts they work well when your looking to use some boost for racing. give me a e-mail if you have any other questions.

Re: Turbo'd sbc

Depends on how much power you want to make and how much money you want to spend

stock block 4 bolt mains can hold a fair amount of power. Keep it all forged 355 and 9 to 1 comp with aluminum heads. 10-15psi on pump shouldnt be out of the question and REALLY make things interesting when you stomp on the gas.
