Drive a Classic + Decent Milage? 3.8 X-plant!
Drive a Classic + Decent Milage? 3.8 X-plant!
I read quite a bit about folks who like to drop in a big block and tune it for fastest quarter mile but I wonder how much longer that will last with $5/gal gasoline quickly staring us down? Maybe longer than I could imagine! Anyway, my current project involves transplanting a series II 3800 into my g-body with the goal of exceeding the 25MPG these cars typically got with the factory 231 Buick and TH-350 setup. This way I can enjoy the experience of riding in my shiny classic without draining my wallet at the pump, still pull a trailer occasionally, and even blow the doors off a rice burner once in a while! This will be fun! Donor vehicle: 1999 Camaro with 4L60E, totaled in an accident w/telephone pole on an icy ride to work one morning (I presume). Some potential pitfalls: * Clearance of A/C compressor with frame. * Everything else involved with modernizing the fuel delivery system, such as in-tank electric fuel pump and return line. * Changing the rear gear to the correct ratio. * Obtaining and integrating a period-compatible electronic speedometer. * Eliminating or bypassing the donor engine computer VATS, SRS, and ABS system. Has anyone actually attempted/succeeded implementing such a project? I'm interested in your stories!

This is a new one for me. I'd consider top swapping from a Monte Carlo SS for low boost blower giggles! All in all it sounds like you've got your bases covered theoretically, time to apply!
This is not one I've seen tackled before, needless to say I'm interested!

I'll post my progress and pics too, probably. It's the computer changes that I'm most concerned with, I know they can be reprogrammed just don't know who can or will want to do it. These guys tune V8 computers all the time, but I never see much activity on hacking V6 computers, they'll probably tell me to take a hike!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Any details on the configuration? Rear ratio, motor year/fuel system and where/what it came from? Is it original, anything you can share... Thx!

Most of your issues aren't applicable to thirdgen F-bodies. If you have something that may be of interest or apply to someone doing a thirdgen F-body swap, you can post that separately.
