Dropping a 355 in, what to remove from bay

Hi all. I will be dropping in a 355 I bought from my instructor from a restored 74 Nova, its good for about 400 horses right now. It is carbureted (it was just rebuilt with forged and painted, ect.) I was going to rebuild my 305 but I bought this beast for $750 so you can't beat the price haha.

But I was looking for what I should gut out form my bay that won't be hooking up...I imagine a lot of stuff will be going. I was told to not cut wires, to remove them for later use in case I want to use my TPI system. Anyone got a quick list of things so I can start researching them? I know pretty much all EVAP will be going and most of my wiring harness...that's about it. And anything related to TPI and my old air intake I think.

Usually all of the pass side wiring harness comes out - but like you said, don't cut it, just tuck it in the fenderwell. Even if you decide to never go back to the TPI, those wires are great to have for future stuff (like underhood lighting, manual fan switch wiring, TC lockup, etc.).

What to remove depends on what you don't want. About the only thing under nthe hood once the engine is removed is battery, rad fan and hoses, evap can, brakes and steering, and A/C.

Have you verified with local/state inspectors that it's legal for you to switch that car to an aftermarket carb setup? It's not legal alot of places and no inspection = no driving!

I have the entire A/C system removed already, so I guess it will be just an engine and a transmission!

Btw, it's also illegal to have any body lifts on a vehicle, as well as having over a certain HP. Not all laws are enforced The stateys already did their little session with us on inspections and laws for them. Turns out most of us would have failed something.

Huh?

Body lifts aren't illegal - as long as provisions are made to keep another car from running under the bumper.

HP? Not hardly. Several California folks have 1200+hp daily drivers that pass ALL Cali inspections legally - and Cali is the hardest state to pass inspection in. What about Vipers? There are at least a dozen here in town that are 800hp cars that pass every emission and other inspection totally legally. And Veyrons? They are legally imported and driven - that's 1000hp stock!

Not trying to argue the morality - I'm just saying - many states don't allow aftermarket carbs on newer cars, and thus many inspectors won't pass, and no inspection usually means no plate, and therefore no driving. I'm not agreeing with it, it's just a fact.

I myself have aftermarket carbed in a 1992 Camaro, but I slide because 1) I don't go to any franchise place for inspection, I go to a local yocal Joe Blow, 2) I go out of county (since I live in an emissions county) where they don't bother looking because they don't have to, and 3) there's only standard safety inspection here for cars older than 1996 - lights/horn/wipres/brakes - maybe the inspectors are 'supposed' to look for other things, but it's not mandated that they do.

Alot of folks want to carb, and they spend alot of cash to do so, only to find out they can't get plates - just trying to help by mentioning it.

Hey I'm just telling you what the Statey told us. He said body lifts are illegal as well as over 500 HP, along with a plethora of tiny things that almost everyone has that no one gets nailed for. if a state inspection station here followed every law to the T, they wouldn't be able to pass most trucks. Or maybe he said suspension lifts...it was one of those.

My car will be getting inspected by the same guy selling me the motor I'm not worried. I'm restoring the car, in a few months it will be getting a new floor and new paint and carpets. if I ever get pulled over it's because the cop likes my car haha.

I'm saving all my EVAP and A/C I removed just in case there is an issue. They don't have to function they just have to be in the car cuz it was like that from the factory. That's the only law that I gotta worry about.
