Mechanical or Electronic Fuel Pump
Hey guys, I'm in the final stages of my engine swap. I need some information on what should be done regarding my fuel tank. The car was an 87' 2.8 V6 which means it has the electronic fuel pump, I'm swapping a 1970 carbed 350 into it and already have the mechanical fuel pump. I need to know if theres anyway the electronic pump could be used but would rather switch to the mechanical and run my fuel line from the bottom of the tank. Would like to hear what you guys think I should do, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You either have to use the electric pump in the tank, or remove it from the tank - no other options.
Personally, I'd use it. Buy a block off plate for the mechanical pump and remove it from the motor, and buy a Mallory 4309 fuel pressure regulator to reduce the fuel pressure from the intank pump. Then, one day, when the intank pump craps out, you can drop the tank and either 1) replace it, or 2) remove it and install a pickup and then use the mechanical pump on the block if you desire.

you can also use both....leave the pump in the tank, wire it so it works, and use the mchanical fuel pump too. some of the factory carbed 3rd gens had a mech fuel pump with an electric helper pump in the tank. the mech pump acts as a pressure regulator for the in tank pump.
Other wise youll have to either use the mech pump and drop the tank and remove the intank pump and either swap to a carbed pickup or convert yours.
Or use the stock v-6 pump and install a return style regulator.

To use both the intank pump and a mechanical pump, you'll need to get a different mechanical pump from a 1987 carbed car that is setup for a return line - the one that's on your 1970's motor will not work.

BTW, it doesn't have to be '87. All 3rd gen carb V8's used the same mechanical fuel pump.
