remove vats and ecm for tpi to carb swap
remove vats and ecm for tpi to carb swap
I am building a 350 with carb to replace a bad 5.7 tpi that is in 1992 z28. I will be dropping the tank to remove the fue pump and will have a mechanical pump on new build. I will also have a distributor with vac. I am trying to make it work without computer or ecm. Before I started removing the engine i noticed that the key will not turn the starter (no click or anything). I have power to everything else. I want to know how to how to do awsy with the vats and ecm. I do not want to use the resistor trick on the wires on the column. I want to do away with vats all together. Thanks for any help

There are a couple of tech articles linked from the thirdgen.org homepage that discuss VATS. You should be able to figure out from that what you have to jumper to bypass it.

All you have to do is ground the black wire from the starter enable relay, located in the driver side footwell, usually up in where the fuse box or hood release latch is - the relay will have a large yellow wire from the ignition switch (located on top of the steering column under the gauges kind of), and have a large dark green wire running out to the neutral safety switch, along with a small black wire that comes from the VATS module - just cut the black wire and permanently ground it anywhere.

Wire comes from relay to VATS module - leave as much as you can connected to the relay, cut it, and ground it for the relay - don't need anything on the VATS module side, just let it hang.
