Hey guys, doing an engine swap on my 91 RS
I have a 91 Camaro RS that has a 3.1 litre in it. Well, it blew, and I always said that when it blew I'd get another one for it...But the more I think about it the more I want to upgrade.
I am open to just sticking to a 3.1 but they are so hard to find and everyone wants a fortune for them. If you have a 3.1 litre and live near Western Pennsylvania we could be talking.
Anyways, what I am asking you guys is what are my options for engines here? I hear that perhaps a 3400 out of later Camaros would bolt in with a few changes...I also hear that my trans and engine cradle is compatible with the 305 or 350 V8s...if that's the case I can get a 305 for like 100 bucks I think. If any of these engines require significant changes to the car I'm just gonna stick to the 3.1. It got really good gas and could still move when it had to.
Anyways, thanks guy, looking forward to being on here regularly.

Re: Hey guys, doing an engine swap on my 91 RS
Trans is not compatible with a V8 to my knowledge. There were a few V6's that had the same bolt pattern as a V8, but I don't think a 3.1 is one of them (V6's are 60 degree motors, V8's are 90 degree motors). So to do a V8, you'd need a 700R4 for a V8 as well.
ALL 3rd gen have the holes in the crossmember for the V8 - it's just that the V8 motor mounts bolt the engine farther forward in the extra set of holes.

So in other words it's new trans or just go another 3.1. That's really all I wanted to know, I think I'll stick to the 3.1.

There is a sticky in the V6 forum regarding the 3400 swap.

3.4 and 3400 are very different things.
3.4 will swap in with almost no changes. Basically the easiest possible upgrade.
3400 can be done, but it looks like a pain in the ***. About as much work as a v8 swap. If you're not looking to race, find a 3.4 on ebay, craigslist, pull-a-part, etc.
