AFR 350 Build

Hi everyone,
So I've decided that since my camaro is no longer my daily driver and will be tagged historic in 2012(no emissions or inspections) that I'm going to go with a new heads and cam setup. My goal is to get more power (maybe 450 at the crank), run on pump gas and keep the shortblock assembly I have now. This is my first performance engine build so I'm looking for any criticism and advice people have to give. Along with this i'll be adding a vigilante torque converter and a 9 inch rearend.

Here's the shortblock I already have:
Four bolt main.
Reworked stock crank.
Hypereutectic flat top pistons w/ moly rings.
Stock connecting rods.
High volume oil pump
Less than 5000miles.

Here's my plans:
Afr 1041 195 65cc
Comp Cams Magnum 280 HR
Comp High Energy lifters
1.6 rockers
Edelbrock Airgap
Holley double pumper 750

My biggest concern is being able to run pump gas with these heads. With those heads and the flat top pistons and a .041" gasket i get about 10.1:1 will this be too much to run on 93 octane? I'm also worried about piston to valve clearance with that much lift. Thanks for your help. Hopefully by the end of the summer i can have all my parts together and then begin assembly in the fall.

195s and an XR288? Looks like a recipe for 500 HP and 6500 rpm. You think your short block is up to that?
10.1:1 may seem like alot, but these are aluminum heads with very efficient combustion chambers.
I'd go with the 180s, and an XR276, and still expect 450 HP. Have you seen the dyno results on AFR's website?
Plus if you're at elevation, you can run extra compression just for the fact of the thinner air up there.

You still need to buy my seats! They'll get you up to 450 at the crank!

Solid plan though man, 400 is a very respectable number, not too many things on the street would be able to touch it, or at least get around you easily.

Re: AFR 350 Build

Haha Shadow after getting my butt handed to me by a bunch of terminator mustangs last weekend I decided to leave my $20 ebay seat covers on and start on the engine/drivetrain. Plus i leave for sea in a month so i stop paying bills and start making some money.

Thanks for the advice ronnjonn. I thought that would be too much cam and now I know for sure. The only issue I had with the 180's was if i wanted to improve upon it later(383) I would have to get new heads. I'm definitely not at elevation though I sit right at sea level.

I'll have to go for a cruise with you sometime then. I'll certainly be on termi type power levels with the Vortech. Eventually I'm dropping in a built short block from MMR and I'm going to pulley the Vortech down as much as I can. Probably convert it to a 10 rib setup with a 2.50" pulley.

Sorry I couldn't get up with you last weekend. Unfortunately that was the last weekend I'm going to be on delmarva because of school and going out to sea I won't be back when the weather is nice for another two years. So I guess i'll see you at a Cruisin 2013 and the car should be done by then haha.

OK NOW BACK TO TOPIC!

Re: AFR 350 Build

I didn't even go down to OC. I was supposed to cruise down there with ninetyone, but his wife didn't feel like driving out of the way to meet me. So I cruised around on 113 and headed back home.

I was going to go Sunday but another one of my friends couldn't get out of work. No point in driving down there when I'd have to give him a ride back to get to work before 3.

Might be dangerous to mess with the Rustang in 2013! I put all the cash into cars as I can afford. Just since November, I think around an extra 5K has gone into the SCT Livewire, T56 swap, Vortech blower. It'll easily jump to 600-700+ at the wheels if I waste another ~12K. T56 rebuild from Tick, MMR 5.0 short block, CMS blower cams, Spec twin disc, pulley the Vortech down a bunch, etc. It's some nice experience piecing together a decently high HP build. By the time I go for twin turbos on the IROC it'll be easy.

Sorry! I'm an idiot for staying off topic! Didn't see it on time, haha.
