Progression towards Punishment

New to the forum but not to the world of third-gen Camaro,I have had three.Anyway My 85 Z28 was blowing death smoke every time I stomped it and the motor had long been tired.Perfect time to use the 400 horse 350 I have had for years.

I'll give a rundown of the details on the engine.
My dads friend had a 1969 350 4 bolt main bare block laying around for years and I was about to graduate high school,I'm 28 now.Anyway they sent it to the machine shop and had it bored .30 over, had all the other essentials done. They ended up putting a set of 400 heads on it,Ported, polished and shaved.,new valves,springs,rockers.etc.Eagle rotating assembly,I mean all internals new, high volume pickup etc.I'm not sure the cam lift but I know it's a comp and when coasting below 10 mph at idle it lurches forward pretty good and sounds real nice. It's got an edelbrock dual plane intake but I'm not sure which one.The list goes on.I'll spare the pain of making you guys read.
It took me a while but my dad said they spent around $3200 building it,He didn't want me to mention it to mom.

It first was put in a '77 Chevy Van,short wheelbase and I stomped all my bro's back then with it.Everyone was always saying how nasty the motor in my van was.I couldn't keep u joints in it,and went through 3 used transmissions through the years. When i finally twisted the yoke off the driveshaft I decided it was the end of van though I hated to part with the van.

Next I shoved it in a '95 Chevy Silverado shortbed. It was a wheel lifter (only one wheel) but it was a nasty truck.I dumped so much money into it only to have new problems every time I took it out which brings me to this point...My tired '85 305 Z28.

I am already far along in the process of the swap.
I just have to get the hoist and lift the engines out of both vehicles. It will be a while because I'm cleaning up the wiring, hoses and all the other stuff too.I'm repainting the 350 and the engine bay.

There will be pics so stay tuned.I just have to Hook up my old computer and get them.

Sorry for the rant,I work second shift and got home a while ago so I'm wide awake.

Until next time...... shred some rubber

Re: Progression towards Punishment

This simple exaust job triggered an onslaught of....What if.? I wasn't satisfied with how it sounded so I bypassed the converter.Ripped it out and welded in a straight pipe then took out the stock 1 into 2 muffler and put in a glasspack.Still didnt sound mean enough but worked for the time being. It still sounded a hell of alot better than the stock exaust.

Welding in the straight pipe in place of the converter. My wife enjoys sitting outside with cold beer and cigs while I work on stuff,it's awesome.Plus she takes good pics.

Notice the BFH on the ground, these always come in handy.I made that one myself because the other one was too small. It would be so nice to have a garage or even a slab of concrete so I wouldn't have to roll around on gravel.

Re: Progression towards Punishment

Keep in mind the car was stock before I bought it.It belonged to an older lady and the only reason she sold it was because she had trouble getting in and out of it.
She was aking $2500,I countered with $1000 cash and she took it.

It had 85,000 original miles but I threw double that into the abuse I gave the motor in probably the first 4 months I had it,It was fun.All the while knowing I had a beast to go into it.
Still I sqeezed as much as I could from the 305 without getting into the bottom end of the engine.

Royal purple synthetic,Accel plugs, moroso race wires, msd dist, edelbrock 600 cfm with all provisions removed etc.I eventually put a Holley street avenger on it and Holy S****.The 3200 stall helped too as well as the b&m trick shift fluid combined with the shift kit,WOW!
I would have never took it further if I hadn't seen the death smoke.

In the process of changing plugs and wires I decided all the smog crap had to go so it took a day getting all that stuff off.The ac eventually came off too but those pics will be in a future post.Anyway here are 2 shots..Sorry it was dark by the time I got all the smog junk off.

Then decided to make my hood and body kit look nice...

The hood is a little much some say but I think it's perfect. The car has to reflect your personality right?

Before sanding and final coat on the hood..

Re: Progression towards Punishment

I realized just now paint doesn't tie in to an engine swap.I'm just trying to show everything that went into the build.Sorry guys...

Anyway I'm out of pics right now.I need to get the other computer so I can show you whats going in the bay and how it looks before I repaint the engine.

I am gonna hit the sack now.I got home from work at 1am and it's time to sleep.I'll keep you all posted on progress.

Re: Progression towards Punishment

Got some more done today.I pulled the driveshaft out and disconnected the speedo cable and shift linkage. Also got the trans mount out.

Anyone know the best way to get the tourqe arm out? It's on jackstands and the axle is floating.

Re: Progression towards Punishment

Just disco the 2 bolts holding it onto the axle, and slide it out of the trans mount. Easy as pie!
