rebuilt 1970 350 4 bolt main>350 l98
Wow, havent been on here in months!!!
well anyway!, Guess what guys....I blew My heads and pistons on my l98 350 engine...so now i'm on a mission on buying an engine and i came across a rebuilt 1970 350 engine 4 bolt main. everything on it is new, 325Hp and what not...my question to my ppl is 'will it fit My 87 camaro iroc z28'. my basic plan is to keep my TPI throttle body and all the wiring...help would be much appreciated...

Re: rebuilt 1970 350 4 bolt main>350 l98
it will physically fit, but you're going to run into a few issues
1. intake bolt pattern different on pre-87 heads. should be able to work around this by elongating the bolt holes in the intake
3. flywheel - 1pc vs 2pc rear main seal, easy thing to get around
2. tuning - without knowing the cam, compression, and head specs, it might not be easy to get running well. will need a tune regardless.

So the tuning can be done say by some one at a shop to get everything right...(sorry not much of a engine wizz) but the can you clarify the Flywheel part please...and if i cannot for whatever reason keep my manifold and throttle body, does that mean the wiring goes out the window too....meaning i would have to most likely re-wire the whole thing..???

No, you can keep your TPI intake and all the wiring. You will just have to modify the intake bolt holes to allow it to bolt to the older style heads. Seriously, well worth the little effort it will take to retain the TPI system. Do some searching on here and you will find out exactly whe it is you need to do to make them fit. Take the time and do it right.
The flywheel part is the fact that the older block (Pre-87) uses a 2-piece rear main seal. It therefore requires a flexplate/flywheel to match the older motor. Your stock one will not fit. Bolt pattern to the crank is different. Easy fix.
Also, the "tune" he is referring to (I believe) is the fact that you will need a custom chip burned that you then place into your computer. The reason for this is the fact that the cam spec's are likely not the same, nor the flow rates on the heads. The best thing to do is contact a company that does this everyday and give them AS MUCH INFORMATION as you can on the engine and intake system as well as trans, rear selection, ect. You get this chip, bolt on the TPI intake, and you will have a pretty stout Heartbeat

Don't forget the other down sides it's a flat tappet engine unless it has retro rollers and more importantly you will have trouble fitting the passenger side accessory bracket as you're not going to have all the bolt holes.
