list of gm cars w/direct fit
I've been trying to find a simple list of gm cars and trucks that have direct fit motors. The kind that will bolt right up to a 700r4 or manual tranny.Size isn't the issue here.Be it 4cylinder,v6 or v8.carb,tbi,tpi.If members would could you give info on special set-ups. Mostly I'm looking for motors that can be droped in and hooked up without changing trannys or cutting or welding. In carbed motors I understand that changes in fuel pressure have to be made. For instanse, would a older chevy 302 v8 have a bolt pattern that would be the same as a 305 in an 86 camaro? Or even the 283? When I'm looking to find a motor,I'd like to know what dose work what could work and what won't work.Any input would help! Thanks.

Re: list of gm cars w/direct fit
Externally the SBC are all the same. BBC will also fit but with the longer block, it will sit slightly forward. Engine mounts sit in the same position on both so transmission position doesn't change. SBC and BBC share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. The I4 or V6 may not share the same bellhousing pattern depending on the exact engine size. 4.3L V6 should be a direct swap as it's just a 5.7L with 2 cylinders cut off.
What makes an easy swap or not is the hookups. Yanking out a TBI/TPI computer controlled engine and dropping in an older carbed engine just means there's a lot of electric stuff not required. Swapping V6 to V8 needs more stuff plus electronic engine to electronic engine may need an ECM swap or reprogram.
I've seen many people yanking V6 engines out of S10 pickup trucks to drop into a third gen. When you get into front wheel drive cars, those engines may or may not fit into a rear wheel drive chassis.

the 4.3L would need different mounts to the frame. I think trans dapt makes a set, they would be the ones that bolt a 4.3 into the place of a 2.8L. It's still a bolt in because the holes are in the frame still.
