3.1 to 5.0 engine/fuel injection Swap
3.1 to 5.0 engine/fuel injection Swap
Hello,
I'm new to this site and this is my first engine swap. I've read a lot of threads regarding V6 to V8 swaps, but have not found any information relating to this exact swap. So, I've got a few questions that I hope someone can help me with.
Here's the car I'm working with:
The car is a 1992 camaro that originally was equipped with an automatic 3.1 V6 fuel injection system.
Here's the drivetrain:
1992 5.0 TBI engine, 700r4, ECM/Harness, Gauge cluster
Here's what I've done:
I've currently removed the 3.1, transmission, engine harness, ECM, and exhaust system. I've installed the 305 TBI engine, 700R4 Transmission, ECM/engine harness, and gauge cluster. At this point I have the engine harness loosely laid out and it appears to match up to the interior harness on the driver side of the car.
My questions are:
1. Will my engine harness integrate seamlessly with the interior harness? (upon initial glance it appears to be quite similar)
2.The V6 fuel lines bolt directly to the 5.0 throttle body without modification.. However, I'm sure I'll need to reduce the fuel pressure. Any recommendations on a particular pressure regulator? Or swap the in tank pump?
3. Will the electronic Trans lock out system still work as the v6 had a different transmission, but still utilized the electronic trans lockout system? (the plug is the same)
These are my main concerns at this point. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 3.1 to 5.0 engine/fuel injection Swap
1) Changes from V6/TPI wiring to TBI revolve around the speedo for 90-92. You'll have to add a buffer box and reroute the VSS wires from the C100 where they dead end
What you've got

What you need to change it to. Notice the C100 designation where the V6/TPI diagram is direct to the ECM

2) Swap the in tank pump for one from a TBI car. V6/TPI operate at 43psi, TBI at 14psi. The regulator in the TB might be able to hold it but why risk it
3) Only difference for V6 to V8 700R4 is the bellhousing bolt pattern. Plug it in and ride
FYI, your cluster can stay. Only need to swap the tach, more importantly just the chip which most likely is already on the fritz
Heres the fix. To save time for reading the whole thing, the magic number is 100k and you need two. Get them at radio shack for about $1 for 5
