Re: bbc 454 swap???
A 750 CFM will be fine.
The factory fuel pump will work but you need to regulate it down to 6-7 psi fuel pressure and it's best to use a bypass regulator. It will return the fuel not required by the engine back to the tank and will take the headhead load off the pump.
I don't know if your 91 has an electronic transmission or not. If it does then you need to install a TPS on the carb so that the tranny will know the throttle position to shift.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
on my swap the stock block mounted fuel pump worked fine for me i just took the stock one out of the tank and put a piece of hose to replace it. i also used moroso solid motor mounts(the guy at summit told me there were two sizes like a taller or shorter set so i grabed the shorter ones) and with a stock intake and carb i was able to clear my stock hood with a little stubby filter.
Re: bbc 454 swap???
I have a 700r4 with electronic ovedrive i belive 4th and tq lockup are electricly controlled . I found a electrical control box that would let you adjust the lockup with a dial in the car. I would like to run the electric intank pump so a regulator would be good. Is there any specific part number for a regulator that you know will be perfect?

A lot of ppl recommend the Mallory pressure regulator. Sorry the part # skips my mind right now, something like 4309.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
that sounds like right part number. i've already converted my tbi 305 to carb, and thats what i used. it made a world of difference. hopefully gonna get my 454 after the new year. I'm eventually gonna put a 4l80 in and a 14 bolt rear end. both out of a 2000 3500 van. great deal on the van. a buddy of mine is gonna sell it to me for 800. i'll rebuild the 350 for my tahoe, then take the body to the scrap yard and make half my money back. then i will have a near indestructable drivetrain. cant wait!!!

Re: bbc 454 swap???
the 4l80 is a LOT bigger than the 700r4 and 4l60, youre gonna have to modify the trans tunnel quiet a bit to get it to fit in there...

i think it requires a bit more than "massaging" more like cutting peices out

i dont have a problem with that. not to sound cocky, but i'm pretty handy with a torch and welder. and since my car pretty much came out of the woods, i have no problem cutting into the transmission tunnel

then you have 1 up on a lot of people on here. the majority just say "well i want to put this and that in my car" without actually planning or making sure it will fit or work, or whats required to make it fit and work.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
i've actually been planning this for a while. i've done all kinds of research on this. i know that it would be so much easier to just go ahead with a th350 or 400, but i really want that 4 speed with the lock up converter for the drivability. the only problem i've come across is the computer controled shifting. i believe i found my solution at rosslertans.com. they have a box to plug in and make it manual shift. we'll see in time i still have a ways to go. i'm actually more focused on getting the huge rear end up under the car and possibly a custom 4 link i've been drawing up. lots and lots of work.......

id suggest taking a lot of pics and doing a write up an exactly what it took to cram a 4l80e and 14 bolt in a third gen.

yea i will definately have to do that. it will take a while, do to the fact i have a new son on the way. plus i am only a diesle mechanic. lack of money is the reason i've done so much research. it's the only way i can feel i'm getting any progress done. so when i do have the money, the project should be a breaze... lol but we all know how that goes

Re: bbc 454 swap???
well i did mine without any tps. it does fine, it just holds the gears a little longer when it's cold. but the cool part is i catch 2nd just about everytime it shifts. especialy when it's wet out. it will actually get crooked when its wet. but once it warms up it drives normal and shifts alot smoother. you will however have to get a lockup controller. it will not lock up without it. summit has them pretty reasonable

Thats where im at i have the patriot headers that i will modify to work then fuel systme will be installed then electrical and cooling. not sure what carb to get yet or what to run with for pump. I have a long water pump on it now with brakets for passenger side alternator mount and drivers lower for power steering looks like stock ps pump will clear steering box.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
I'm planning on a similar kind of build but a couple steps back, my uncle had an 88 gm dually sitting, w a rebuilt tranny and motor (believe its a 454) before it was parked, planning and researching to put it in a third gen, any big forewarnings, problems I could be surprised with?

Re: bbc 454 swap???
I don't Have the car yet. Saw an article in super chevy bout a bunch of low budget builds three out of the five were third gens. The more I look into these cars the more I liked what I saw. The plan is to be a street/autocross Menatilty. So i am anticipating to reinforce the frame. As for exhaust looking into a banks twin style of setup but nothing is in stone yet. This is my first project and want to do things as close to right without wasting money. W the help of some mechanic friends I'm hoping to do as much of the work myself.
Re: bbc 454 swap???
still have some more parts to get like fuel system and cooling and some more odds and ends. would like to get subframe connectors as well. just try to do the swap on a very low buck will get engine running first then upgrade later. thinking of going with a 750 holly double pumper or a cheap summit racing 750. not sure yet?? gets pretty cold(-20F) up here in ND so i hope overheating is not as easy to do as if i were in the desert states. i had fitted the exhaust headers partriots to the engine after cutting the passenger side and bending it and welding it back up it fits perfect. stock trans 700r still thinking about a electric speed sensor kit from summit for the tq lockup. radiator is going to be the one that fits the best and i hope for good cooling. had to go with long water pump from the local store could not find a alternator mount on the passenger side for the short pumps sucks". but i think i will still heave plenty of room for the bigest readiator and electric fans setup too. will post ned pics soon!!

I tried to post a link, but i suck. Your ride looks just like the car in 89454's sig photo. Not saying they are the same, just look alot( both in primer, same hood, wheels) alike. Nice ride... both of them.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
Mine is a short deck 454 with a truck th400. Stock single electric fan, long water pump. Everything fit and with the stock iron manifold, qjet, and low truck filter, it fit under the hood. I used the stock FI pump with a keith black regulator. Had to build a trans crossmember, headers, exhaust, and get a driveline made.
Good luck with the build!

Re: bbc 454 swap???
Ya im planning on using what i can from the truck then filling in the rest of the puzzle from there. What would be a the cost of having a driveline made? How does the third gen rear end hold up to a BBC? Thanks for all the heads up.

Re: bbc 454 swap???
"Driveline" made? I'm not sure what exactly you mean. As far as will the stock rear end hold up? Depends on how hard you beat on it(hard launches vs none, plus there's slicks vs street tire), but mostly... not for very long. Even with axle and gear and posi upgrade's the 9 or 10 bolt rear ends are strength limited. There are plenty of aftermarket rears available for 3rd gens but unless you plan to fab one yourself, which is very doable by the way, you can expect to pay more than $1000. for one new retail. If you ment 'Driveshaft', you can have on made for about $150-$500+ depending on type of material and size and other options.
