80s 305 to 70s 350
im trying to figure out if i can swap my 87 305 out with a 350 out of a 70s chevy truck. I wana know if the 305s tranmission will line up to the 70s block? Does anyone know?

If you are hooking it up too a 700r4 you will need to get a flexplate for a 2 piece rear main seal engine like a 85 camaro.

the only other thing I can think of if you are going to use the intake off the 87 you will need to elongate the center 4 bolt holes

the blocks are physically the same with minor differemces like the rear main seal. the trans will bolt up since the mounting flanges are the same. if you have an auto youll need a different flexplate. the 70s 350 will be a flat tappet cam and not a roller cam. so youll need to add a zddp addative at every oil change if you want the cam to last.
on a side note, unless you plan on rebuiliding the 70s 350 and not using the stock parts, its not gonna have much more power than the 305 thats in there. 70s 350s are low compression, low output, smogger engines.

thanks about using the additive and the only reason i am using the 350 is just because it is in better cond and has about 70,000 less miles on it than my 305

In addition to the above, the dipstick will be on the driver side and the 3rd gen exhaust manifold tries to take up the same space the dipstick tube takes. Solved with headers.
In the "for what it's worth" department, your 80's 305 heads will be much better than the 70's truck heads, and the 305 heads will be good for unleaded gas. And your '87 intake will fit the 305 heads.
Bottom line: The 70's 350 short block will probably be fine, but the heads are door stops.
Oh, check the block for 3 starter mount bolt holes. If it only has 2, the 3rd gen starter won't bolt up.

you can also solve the dipstick problem with a flexible tube like the one lokar sells. not a cheap alternative, but an alternative none the less.....personally id go with headers and a better exhaust all the way back. every little bit will help that smogger 350.
and since the engine is low compression anyway, you can saftely get away with using the 305's heads on it and youll boost the power up a little in the process.
and good catch on the starter holes, i had forgot about that.
