350 TPI Engine Swap
I was wonderin if i can get some help or suggestions, would be much appreciated. I have a 1992 RS Camaro with a 305 TBI (motor froze over), automatic trans (700R4). I have a buddy who took out his 350 TPI from a 1992 Z28 and will sell it to me. This brings up a few questions: Will the TPI motor work with the TBI, im wanting to keep it TBI still?? Is the tranny good enough to handle it?? What would i have to change out or do to make it work?? My buddy told me I may have to get a custom chip if i do but i wanna know if theres more i need to do before i can do the swap what i need to do. Thanks in advance

Re: 350 TPI Engine Swap
I would try to swap it to TPI if I was in your position. If you keep it TBI I believe you only need to swap the ECM, but I'm not entirely sure.
Your trans should also be fine.

The good news is the TBI equipment will bolt right to the '92 350.
That's about where the good news ends.
The 305 TBI got the worst possible exhaust - not even adequate for the 305. Putting a 350 under the hood just compounds the problem. You really need to improve the exhaust before considering a 350.
Next, the 305 TBI is a "speed density" system. That means it takes the conditions the sensors tell the computer (throttle position, manifold vacuum, O2 feedback, etc.) and applies fuel and spark according to pre-programed tables. These tables assume things such as displacement and exhaust and their effect air flow, without knowing the actual flow. So, when you change something that affects air flow, the computer will not respond properly. So, at a minimum a retune is required.
The other thing is 305 and 350 TBI used different size injectors. It isn't too hard to find a 350 TBI, though, and just bolting it on.
The TBI forum has a wealth of information about these issues, and how to handle them.
