355 build/install
i finally got my stuff back from the machine shop today after a little over 5 weeks of waiting.
i will be putting it together and installing it over the course of the next 3 days.
the build consists of
stock crack(turned)
stock rods
speed pro flat tops
gm vortec heads with alex parts springs
lunati 60103 flat tappet cam
jegs 331 champion vortec intake
magnum 1.52 self aligning rockers
edelbrock 750cfm carb
thats pretty much it for the motor, the rest is in the signature. i will be using the stock serpentine and not using the smog or a/c
the build sounds pretty basic but im hoping for 400hp to the crank.
i am a broke college kid and i just found out i got a summer job with my dad so the next and only item i will buy for a long while is a yank 4k stall converter.
my goal is a 11.99 1/4 mile when its all said and done.
i only plan on spraying 100 to 125 shot max and i want the 11.99 w/o nos
ill be sure to take pics of the build and install.
let me know what you all think

You need a better intake. Your cam goes to 6200 RPMs, the intake only 5500.
You should get a real carb.
If you run 11.99 NA, you'll run low-11's/high-10's with a hundred shot, meaning you'll need a 6-point roll bar. A broke college kid should probably stay away from laughing gas.

the car will see 95% street/5%strip, so until i save get some money for an air gap or something along those lines its all i have to work with.
cheater kit was also given to me, i used to run it on my old 355, it was jetted for 180hp. although, it needed it to get it moving with 2.73s and sadly my local track doesnt have a tech inspection to pass. dad runs a 9.XX w/o a cage.
thanks for the input, and i will address these issues asap. i know i should probably get a holley lol
oh and ill be tuning with a wideband so hopefully i can get the edelbrock figured out

got all the pistons in, the heads on, cam and timing set on, lifters, pushrods and rockers. all valves adjusted and intake manifold and valve covers on.
stuff i have to pick up at parts store- timing cover, thermostat and oil pump pickup, and oil pump bolts.
my goal is to have it in the car tomorrow and finish the exhaust and take it for its maiden voyage on sunday

ok got kinda pissed after i went to prime it, i forgot to put the oil pump drive on. pulled the pan and have that back on and the oil is in it now(along with break in addititive). waiting until tomorrow morning to prime it. aside from that its 100% ready to drop in.
and it will be another month or 2 before i make it to the drag. i wont go until i have the 4k converter and some rear suspension parts and some drag radials. so 2 months max

Re: 355 build/install
i stayed up working on it until i couldnt work anymore. the motor is in, headers on, radiator and all my hoses. the majority of my time went to fabbing up the rest of the exhaust, it is 2.5s into a single 3.5. i have it close but needs tweaked just a tad for the best ground clearance

got the exhaust finished and bolted on, distributor in, plugs, wires, carb, nitrous plate/selenoids/purge and a bunch of odds and ends, only a couple minute things to finish up and get it fired up.
i didnt reach my 3 day deadline but i wasnt counting on a whole day for exhaust(ran out of argon)

man take your time 355. lol. sounds like your really jamming it out. are you t.i.g. welding the exhaust? been following your thread cause it seems a little similar to mine. i think your on track for a hot street ride. what did you end up doing on your flexplate/starter issue? there are flexplates drilled for 2 different size converters, but i think its the 168 tooth? id junk the 400 flexplate as advised before. photobucket has been working for me, i send pics right from the phone, copy/paste the IMG code. no cords needed. best of luck, and keep us updated. joe

So you took out an aluminum headed 406 and replaced it with a cast iron head 355??? No offense but that seems like a step backwards.

Re: 355 build/install
no offense taken, i bought the car knowing i would not get to keep the motor, so from my standpoint, the 355 will be plenty. it only has 9.4 compression pistons so i would imagine even with iron heads it will be very pump gas friendly

im not going to lie, im getting pretty burnt out.
its down to the final couple things, like fuel line, wiring, and the rest of the fluids. hope to get it started in a little bit though. then the feeling of being burnt out will hopefully be over

so it is done finally, all of my perserverance has paid off. i did not get to start it though, forgot to put the plugs in the head and only had one, i have the plug now so thats all she wrote. ill put up a couple more photos of the exhaust ground clearance and the "almost" wired engine bay.
i have about 5 to 6 inches of ground clearance with the stock 700r4 crossmember. the suspension is 100% stock aside from air shocks on the rear.

shes coming together! break your cam in right, tune it, and work out the bugs little by little. rome wasnt built in a day. nothing like doing it yourself!

Damn man, you put that motor together fast! Sounds like a good build, My 882 heads should be at my house in a day or two, I snapped the back pin in stud twice, on two different heads. Got some guideplates, hardened pushrods, and screw in studs. Can't wait to start it up!

thanks guys
i am using 20w50 valvoline vr1 oil and comp cams break in additive. plus i smeared that cam pretty good with the lunati cam lube. i am using a aem wideband so hopefully tuning will be a breeze. ill post a video of it running.
thanks again for all the kind words and support,
justin

I'm thinking about using synthetic oil after break in, but not sure yet. I used some summit zddp oil for my cam with straight 30 valvoline

synthetic is overrated, my neighbor changed his oil 5 times the whole time he owned his truck(bought it new) he put 225k miles on it before it started to knock.

Re: 355 build/install
the vr1 racing oil still has the zddp in it. its all i ever run. some guys swear by the rottela oil also, but i just use whats been working so far. idk about the synthetics, ive heard a few people talk about getting seal leaks from useing it. not sure there is any truth to that or not?

Re: 355 build/install
At walmart they have truck oil, rottela like you said, that has zinc still in it, and they have synthetic with zinc. Seal leaks may happen because it can clean out the gunk that has been blocking the leaks from what I've heard. If you have good seals on your gasket, like you would with regular oil anyway, I don't think there will be a problem.

I will agree that the hydrocracked Group III "synthetics" are over-rated. But don't paint with too broad of a brush.
If your neighbor had used a Group IV PAO synthetic, it wouldn't have started to knock.
If you respect your engine, you'll give it what it needs to live.
This is a great flat tappet PAO synthetic:

oh i agree five7, my neighbor doesnt care for his vehicles, and if he would have the truck would still be around.
anyways, i got the cam broke in, had to shut it off once, got to 230 and only got through the 20 min at 2k rpms.
the cam idles very well, i have my idle set at 850 and its very quiet with the magnaflow, the cam isnt noticeable unless you are behind the car and hear it through the exhaust.

from the sounds of it you are keeping the stock heads and are getting an lt1 cam, and aside from that you want to uprgrade your tbi? and get almost 400hp. the goal is possible out of a 355, but with the setup you have it wont come close.
do you have a roller block or have to get retrofit lifters?
whats your compression?
whats the actual flow on the ported heads?
what about intake manifold?
do you have full exhaust?
there are many variables aside from what you listed,
and look into the lt4 cam if you are set on a roller

Re: 355 build/install
thanks a lot man, it was my first sbc motor build.
no that was the first little bit running, just enough to set the timing, i broke it in like lunati's cam card said
it just has the stock single fan that i haved wired to run all the time and a 180 stat. im also using a summit brand high flow water pump. I think i will be switching to a black magic extreme fan though and an aluminum radiator to take care of the idle heat.
i have yet to drive the car yet be cant wait to, i ordered a one wire alternator from summit today, my harness was cut for one previously. almost 200 for one lol
ill keep you posted on how it drives and pulls. and i love how quiet it is at idle, and it has that nice magnaflow sound when you rev it. cant wait to run it!!!

it might just seem like its running hot if you were sitting there in park, breaking the cam in? hopefully when your moving you wont have any issues.
that sucks about the wireing problems.
i like that your exhaust doesnt sound stupid loud.
again, great job bro! especially your first sbc build!

Re: 355 build/install
ok i got the 1 wire alternator on and it is finally charging.
got my tach installed with shift light as my factory tach is off by 1500rpm.
i have to run the nitrous line up under the car and wire the selenoids and im done with wiring.
i also have to get my fuel line off the upper radiator hose.
this morning i picked up a quart of teal paint. i ditched the 6 inch cowl lift off for an iroc z hood. should look pretty good once i repaint the hood. louvers are being repainted with SEM flat black.
the weather took a dive from 70s to the 30s, so i wont be driving it until this weekend most likely. im going to switch the stock fan out for a 3000cfm fan i have laying around also. it has to be better than the piece stock one
got my tach installed with shift light as my factory tach is off by 1500rpm.
i have to run the nitrous line up under the car and wire the selenoids and im done with wiring.

Re: 355 build/install
getting ready to sand my third and hopefully last coat of body filler(big dent on body line) then its time for some primer and bust out the guide coat and wet sand with 1000 grit.
as long as i have the hood painted and on and the car doesnt over heat with the 3000cfm fan, i will be going to the track on the 20th. i will be trailering it as the closest track is an hour away and im on a stock 10 bolt still. i should have a set of drag radials laying around to put on it, i doubt a set of mt et 28x13.50 will fit. but ill see what else i have laying around.
ill post results soon. and take a pic after i get the hood painted, on the car and outside

got the hood painted and bolted on last night, i am missing a the striker for it, so i ordered that last night. i also got my permacool 3000cfm fan on and that thing pulls some air. hopefully between that and the water wetter it will keep it cool(like 195 to 200 area)
aside from that its ready to go. will add the pics in a second

Re: 355 build/install
honestly i dont know enough to make a great judgement, nor would my opinion be as accurate as others.
300 to 325 hp and around 350 ft lbs @ the FLYWHEEL
i know nothing about your carb or injectors, intake, or exhaust. what is the part # for pistons and what thickness gasket are you using? how about your heads, have they been milled?
