engine bay dimensions
I've searched this for a couple days now and haven't been able to come up with an answer. I'm gettin my ducks in a row to drop a turbo motor into a third gen. I need some dimension. Firewall to edge of core support evap box to brake master width. Strut tower width at closest point and middle of strut tower forward and back. Hope someone can give me some solid numbers. After I see if I can wedge it in ill give you guys my master plan.

Re: engine bay dimensions
What's the big secret? Just tell us the engine, we'll tell you if it fits. Nearly everything's been tried, because nearly everything fits. The big snag is typically if the engine doesn't have a rear-sump oil pan. May as well consider that part mandatory.

Do you not have a car to measure from? Not being an ***, just in case it comes across that way.

No I don't. Been looking for something that hasn't been hacked up. Motor is on its way. I know there has been a little talk about it but nothing that I've seen in my weeks of research. There will be a lot of fab work and possibly one off pieces to make it fit. It is an I6 I'm sure that gives it away pretty good.

Re: engine bay dimensions
With enough time, money and fabrication skills, anything can be made to fit.
Width and length isn't an issue. My BBC is stuffed between the fenders and even with 2-1/4" primary header tubes, it still fits.
Height or depth is another story. As mentioned above, whatever you plan on stuffing in needs to clear the crossmember and steering components. Dropping an engine down as low as it can go still may not provide enough room to clear the hood for an induction system or air cleaner without a cowl hood.
A turbo motor will mainly depend on where the turbos are located. You may need to relocate them to a different position. With any kind of swap like that, never expect anything to fit without doing some sort of fabrication work.

Re: engine bay dimensions
I suggest asking on a swap thread where someone has the engine bay stripped and maybe they could get you some measurements. Find a thread, and pm the op so you don't get accused of thread hijacking haha best of luck to you. I'll be watching to see where this goes.

Re: engine bay dimensions
So the motor dimensions are 31"w X 31"L X 24ish to the bottom of the pan not the dump. I'm just wanting to know what kind of turbo manifold and intake manifold I'm going to have to fab up to get it in the car and running. It'll cost another 4,000 or so if I have to run AEM EMS and getting a single turbo ect. I've been doing my homework and have felt with supras for quite some time along with my past camaros. I'm planning on running a 4" minimum down pipe if not running a stock setup on the motor a tubular k member power assist break master from an mkiv supra if needed. I have fab skills and can do a lot with metal. It's gana be a fun project just wanting to get my last few answers before I pick up a car.

Because you said Supra, I'm guessing you're wanting to swap in a 2JZ. Right?
Don't be embarrassed to say what the motor is. I'm swapping in a 4-cylinder.

Re: engine bay dimensions
Not embarrased just didn't want a lot of bashing in this thread just wanted a few measurements. And its been something I've wanted to do for a long time. Actually sence I first rode in a supra and it felt like someone punched me in the chest. I do love the looks of a supra but my heart truley lie in a third gen. I totaled my first one and have bout and sold a few more. But its time to do a full build.

LOL! Oh, you're going to get BASHED! A LOT! Just accept it. Here's what I started doing to bashers of my swap after a while: IGNORE THEM COMPLETELY. It's your car. Do what YOU want to do with it.
The 2JZ is an amazing motor, and will make your Camaro an awesome ride. It should fit in the engine-bay pretty easily. There are guys fitting the GM Vortec 4200 inline-six into the engine-bay of a 3rd-Gen, and I think it's about the same size if not a little bigger.
I hope you finish this swap, man. I'll be watching...

Re: engine bay dimensions
I'm assuming that the 31" wide measurement you gave is a 2JZ with the stock sequential-turbocharger maifold and intake manifold, yes?
You probably won't be able to run the stock manifolds.
I just went out to my garage, and you have 30.5" between the front subframe rails in a 3rd-Gen Camaro.
You could go with an aftermarket single-turbocharger manifold and aftermarket intake manifold and probably have enough room.

That's what I figured it'll have to be infront of the strut tower not a big deal to build one just takes a little time to get it all caved and welded the motor should be here next week and I'm hoping to locate a shell soon

To get it in and get any bugs worked out with wiring suspension placement ect. There will be a lot that comes off of the motor before it goes in. And plus I'm eager.

I want to see what happens. I'm one of the usual suspects watching the "weird" engine swaps hhaahhaha.
I'm going weird, too, so you're in good company!

Re: engine bay dimensions
We would have one already if enough people could finish these "crazy" swaps and get them roadworthy (myself included.)
I don't know why our brains work the way they do, but the people most likely to undertake these crazy swaps are the least likely to have the funding to do it, all at one time hahahahhahah.
Its making me crazy!

Simply the way mine works. Dump 10 grand into a lsx swap for maybe 600 not street friendly hp or take that same money and approach 1000 street drivable hp

KrisW,

Yeah, I totally agree! It's a blessing, and a curse, all at the same time! Oh, well, I guess we're the only ones gutsy, or brainless, enough to try this stuff out! The, "What do I have to lose" mentallity...
turbo2528psi,
Yeah, your car is going to be really mean with that swap. No doubt.

Re: engine bay dimensions
I guess I'm getting old. I used to think about how many horsepower so that I could bench race (or race for real) with my buddies when I was young.
Now, I want 12 second quarter miles, 25+ mpg, cruise control and AC. From an 80's GM (B-O-P) car. I could buy an old GN or TTA and get it done. But I just keep looking at the money spent for the total package (that is still as old as mine and will still need money put into it) and for half that price I can just build one out of STUFF.
STUFF being for me, relatively high production hardware from the wrecking yard. So Buick V6 (to stay original) or 3800? Plenty out there. Proven platform for any performance level? 3rd gen. Of course hahahaah! You can pick these cars up for NOTHING and every one of them has the potential to fulfill any performance level you desire, so long as you put in the sweat.
I chose this platform on purpose, already being a Buick Olds Pontiac engine guy from my youth.
Good luck to your 2JZ swap! May it come to fruition this year!
And for the little Saturn turbo engine too, Fallen, I hope you get it done. I always wanted to see what a Quad4 would do in one of these cars and you will soon prove it even though your engine is different. The weight, achievable horsepower and handling characteristics will all mimic my plans for the Quad4 Firebird that is on the back burner in my note pad of cars to build. I get to learn from everybody here who does the impossible and just makes my dreams easier to attain.
SO KEEP IT UP!

Got to keep pushing the boundaries of sanity! Besides, I'm too damn stubborn to give up and stop.
Might be using a 3800 in the next project. I think a turbocharged 3800 putting down 400-450whp in a '68 Chevelle will be quite interesting.
Sorry, I think we totally thread-jacked this guy.

Hey!
If he skips town, that just means that one of US will have to do it. Along with the Quad4 swap I also have a GM straight six swap on the list hahahhaha.

As if I'm not poor enough, already!
It's hard for me, personally, to get actually swap a foreign motor into an American car.
But...I may have to get over that for a Corvair project my insane little brain thought up. Subaru boxer-4 in a Corvair? Maybe...
I'm really sorry turbo2528psi. We're INSANE...

I like air cooled just fine; Imagine a turbocharged Porsche 914 engine with a VW bus transaxle for strength!
I may be insane, but I'm NOT sorry.... hahahahhahahahhahahh!
