timing issues

hey all,
i just swapped out a 305 TPI for a 383 stroker, ive gotten everything in and ready to go but i cant figure out the timing. im sitting TDC on the number one piston on the compression stroke and the striker is pointing dead on on the number one spark plug hole, after some turning of the distributer cap i got her to fire but she has no butt and when i put a timing light on her its about three to four inches away from the scale on the retarded side i just tore the timing cover off and im lined up no teeth off. what else can i do? any help would be greatly appriciated

Re: timing issues

SBCs use 2 different balancer/pointers for timing. 12 oclock and 2 oclock. find true TDC and make sure your useing the correct pointer. heres a vid on timing,...hope it helps.
