305 TBI to 350TPI advice needed
We're in the process of swapping a 350 TPI engine from a 1991 Z-28 into my 1989 Formula Firebird (currently has the 305 TBI with the automatic).
I've got a complete engine, including the entire TPI set up, the wiring harness all the way to the computer, and the magical silver box (ECM).
I've had a couple different people tell me it would be easier to pull the engine & trans together, mate them outside the car, and reinstall together. Others say do just the engine - leave the tranny in the car.
My question is this: Who's right? Is it easier to remove all the connections on the 700R4 and take it out with the old motor, or is it easier to fumble around with all the bell housing bolts while trying to line the engine & tranny up?
Most of what I found searching deals with swapping blocks that need all the TPI & computer stuff (or the occasional 5/7 TBI swap). Please post a link if I've missed it somewhere!
Thanks!

I've done it both way (albeit with a carb'd car). It's kind of a wash. The bellhousing bolts are difficult to get to, and you need to support the transmission while you pull the engine if you leave the transmission in the car. If you pull them together, getting the engine hoist to reach is often an issue (I pulled them with the engine hoist on the side), and they are harder to handle. A load leveler will hit the firewall/cowl.
So, do whichever. If you're going to do anything to the transmission, go ahead and pull it.
As for the TBI to TPI conversion, you're going to need different throttle cables (both accelerator and TV), and different radiator hoses.

Thank you for the reply. I wondered if the throttle & TV cables were different or not.
I knew some of the hoses would probably be different. I've got the lower on the donor engine, but the upper is gone.
