400 sbc in an 88 camaro...a lot of loose ends need to be tied up
So this is going to be long and kinda complicated. I'm putting a 400 in an 88 camaro. The engine is mine but the car is my friends. I pulled the engine from a 78 chevy 3 quarter ton. this project is a barebones strip down street car. we got the car with no engine or transmission. it was originally a 305 tbi car. Having a few problems trying to figure out how to hook up things. I read the articles on the efi to carb swap. First thing I wanna do is try to figure out how to get fuel to my carburetor. I have a mechanical cam driven pump on the engine right now. What I want to do is make everything is clean and simple as possible Without spending a lot of money seeing as that is not my car. My second biggest problem is eliminating as much unnecessary wiring as possible. it still has all the wires there but I don't know which ones I need to use it and which ones I can get rid of. my goal is to keep the gauges intact. We are treating this car is pretty much a drag car. I have already removed the h vac system, bkower duct work and control panel. will be removing as much weight as possible including the rear seat headliner and possibly even the carpet. hardest part is te wiring harness is already been cut up a little bit what is mostly all there. I have found a cheap chassis wiring harness kit for 125 dollars but I am trying to do the best with what I got right now. any help would be greatly appreciated. by the way this is my first post but I've been using this site quite a bit for help lately. and a little background on me too I am I a s e certified master tow truck mechanic but I find forums are always the best place to go with people who is already gone through what I am looking to do.

You can get a factory service electric diagnostic manual cheap on Ebay that you won't ever regret buying for that yr car. Those are the ones published for the dealerships with tons of details in them you won't find anywhere else.

The "easy" answer is that big bundle of harness that goes to the passenger side fenderwell is the computer stuff. The computer is located above the passenger's feet inside the car. The harness passes though from the fenderwell to the passenger compartment at the kick panel. To remove: Remove the plastic panel above the passenger feet area, lower the ECM (a couple of screws hold it up behind the dash). Disconnect the harness connectors from the ECM. Remove the carpeted kick panel, which will expose the harness pass-through. Unclip the bulkhead connector. From the fenderwell, remove the plastic liner (the back half is all you should have to remove). Pull the harness out through the kick panel. From the engine compartment, pull the harness out. You can leave anything it's attached to attached, and just remove that component (like sensors). You don't need to cut anything to do this.
The stuff you need to run the engine, feed the gauges, charge the battery, etc, are still in the car. They come into the engine compartment from the rear driver side corner. The chassis power wires are two large red wires that attach to the starter solenoid terminal with the positive battery cable. The start wire is the purple one that is in the same harness. Oil pressure is tan, ignition power is pink, tach wire is white. The alternator harness is along the driver side of the engine compartment, should have one connector and a large red wire. Engine temp wire is green, the sender goes in the driver side head.
That should be all you need for a drag car.

five7 do the color codes your speaking of apply to my 82 z28 also?( they seem to) my questions being, the ignition power pink is in same loom as tach white, correct?also the green for temp is by itself coming off AC compressor wiring loom, right? I'm trying to figure out wiring for my 350 carbed swap into my 82 , I did not disconnect anything from original motor so just not sure exactly what goes where. Thanks in advance!!

have fun. i know it was a pain in the rear end getting my 400 to run in my 90, but i also demanded that it would also be fuel injected. but for a drag car all you need are a couple wires. have fun!
