Which Sensors to Use?

I pulled the fuel injected V6 out of my car and am putting in a carbed 355, can i reuse the V6 oil pressure sensors or do I need to get new ones for a V8? The coolant temp sensor threads into the head, not the intake, correct?

You will want to use the V6 oil pressure sender, because the V6 gauge has a different range than the V8 gauge (V6 is better, IMO).

The temperature gauge uses a sender, not the coolant temperature sensor. The V8 CTS is in the thermostat housing, and goes to the computer. The temperature sender for the gauge is in the driver side head.

The V6 tach is calibrated differently than the V8 tach. Most people change out the tach, but you can just change out the PCB on the back of the tach if you like.

How involved is it to change the PCB on the tach? This is going to be a non computer controlled engine btw.

Tacho runs off the coil ; completely independent to the ECM

Duh on the tach, that'll teach me to think. Ok I'll get the two V6 oil pressure senders, thanks.

Do you mean the oil pressure sender and temp gauge sender?

The V8 temp sender works fine with the V6 temp gauge. Not sure if the V6 sender has the same threads as the V8 sender.

Re: Which Sensors to Use?

The V6 had two oil pressure senders, one for the ignition and one for the fuel pump. Not sure if its the same for the V8 or not.

Okay, one is a switch, one is a sender.

At least some V8's used a combo switch/sender. You should be able to use both the V6 sender and switch on the V8, but not all V8 blocks had provision for both. You may have to rig up a tee fitting.

There is a wide selection of units available
http://www.motorcityreman.com/generalmotors14.html

The 3 wire combined unit five7kid mentions would be the simplest to install ; only needing one location ;the 1/8 NPT port in the block underneath the dist shown
or in the larger (1/4 NPT ?) port above the oil filter
89 combined unit shown on a Vette L98 engine
