383 hsr stroker build

What should I expect with just the stock tune on it? Was a tpi car and put in the new engine and changed the intake to the vortec hsr. It fires up fine but runs like a dog and will only idle at like 12-1500 rpm or it just bogs out and dies. Ive upgraded to 30# injectors at about 40 psi. Also deleted the AIR as well. Should I just expect it to be this way until i get a chip tuned for it or what else can be done otherwise?

Its not good to run this motor on stock tune. You can do damage to it. If its overly rich you can wash the rings and never get them to seal right. Also can put fuel in the oil and wipe bearings out

Would it be worth putting a wideband o2 sensor in this thing? Its starting to get closer and running better. Still awaiting my chip but I've been told that a wideband would be a nice difference maker. But then I've read around here that they wont work with the ecm. Not sure what the best plan is.

Re: 383 hsr stroker build

Wideband is really the best thing for doing tuning but wont do anything by itself. Just reads air fuel. Ecm can be set to handle the signal for logging purposes but not gonna beable to use it for fuel adjustment using standard tpi code. Unless someone has written modified code to use wideband closed loop, only one i know of is code $59 but its boost code. Plus i dont think wideband closed loop is a good idea anyway

Would swapping back to my stock injectors help while I wait for my chip? I moved up to 30# from the stock 24s.

The stock injectors for a 350 are 22 lb/hr. Swapping back to these could give you a lean condition. I'm not familiar with the strokers but it seems like you are moving significantly more air now so you will need more fuel. Again, I am no expert.

I would definitely try to minimize run time until you get a proper chip for it.

The best thing to do is get a proper tune before you ruin it.

Re: 383 hsr stroker build

Hey guys. Finally got my chip installed. What a difference! Anyhow. Im dealing with rough idle and trying to get it sorted. I drives nicely but idles like a bag of crap. Have to have the idle a fair bit above where I would like in order to keep it from stalling. Anyhow I'm wondering what fuel pressure I should be running. I upgraded to the 30# injectors but my pressure is roughly 35 lbs or so. Also it seems to drop quite a bit under throttle. Is this normal? what should I set it to otherwise?

Re: 383 hsr stroker build

It sounds like you may have a fuel pump problem. The pressure should hover around 35-38lbs with the vacuum line installed, and should go right to 43lbs when you remove the vacuum line. Likewise, when you accelerate and your vacuum goes away, fuel pressure should go up to 43lbs.

EDIT: Oops, I just noticed that you've got an HSR. I'm not familiar with the HSR's FPR. If it's got a vacuum line it should behave exactly as I mentioned above. If there's no vacuum line, then you should get a constant 43lbs of pressure under all conditions.

Thanks man. I'm gonna have to adjust it up and see what happens I suppose.

Re: 383 hsr stroker build

So. Went to set timing and found that there is no mark for the timing light to set it to. Some smarty didn't put the little tab on so cant check it with the timing light. So my next question is can the timing be set say through a scanner or do I have to rip everything apart to put the little tab on for the timing marks? Also decided to plug in a code reader just to see and it flashed a code 15 and a code 42. I'm not getting any check engine light though so not too sure what to make of it.
