Crank Sensor Wheel question
So I'm rebuilding an l31 for my 86' Camaro sport. I've swapped it over to a carb setup and am wondering if I still need to install my crank sensor wheel and if I do exactly where to put it. Obviously it goes behind the timing cover, I'm just not sure if there is more to it and which direction it faces.

Re: Crank Sensor Wheel question
So I ultimately decided that since my Camaro won't have the electronics to hook up the Crank Sensor I'm just going to leave it out.

Re: Crank Sensor Wheel question
Depends. What balancer are you using? Stock vortec balancer or regular sbc? Vortec ones for crank reluctor wheel have shorter snout lengths. This will throw off accessory belt alignment slightly when used without crank ring. Regular sbc balancer will fit without ring and shouldnt screw up alignment.
Now if you use vortec plastic timing cover you need to keep sensor plugged in to block off the hole in the cover or buy one that doesnt have that hole. Or get a regular sbc timing cover and make sure it will seal.
Heres an issue. Some sbc balancers are thick around the dampner so it may interfere with timing cover and or sensor in the cover so you cant get balancer all the way on. Ati aluminum super dampners are thin enough but regular steel ones are not. Romac are also too thick for vortec timing cover.

Re: Crank Sensor Wheel question
Thanks for the info, I'm using the stock balancer so I guess I'll have to pull it apart again.
