91 camaro rs v6 swap to v8
91 camaro rs v6 swap to v8
So i am fascinated in camaros, preferably 3rd gen and down. i own a 89 and a 91. i have been wanting to turn my 91 into a dragster but still keep it street legal. i am very limited to resources and spaces to work because i am in the military, stationed in san diego area, but have no problem doing work myself. i am very mechanically inclined, its what i do best. i need help, what will i have to change for swapping a v8 in it, engine mounts? i know i have to rebuild the tranny, pretty sure its a 700r4, thinking about rebuilding it with a shift kit and a corvette servo. and i have been told i am going to need a better rear end, i plan to use slicks or street slicks. i have a block at the machine shop, 350, pistons 30 over, rods and mains 10 over, i want to create power, maybe up to 400 or more, should i bore it out more?, thinking of running carburetor instead of fuel injection. if anyone can give me some guidance it will be greatly appreciated.

That's a huge, broad question. With what you're wanting to do - be ready to spend some money to do things correctly. Oh, and do your homework on how things work beforehand. Don't bore out a motor any more than you need to. Boring a motor out won't give you a huge return in power (very marginal at best). A change in stroke will, though.

Did you read the "sticky" at the top of this forum about "6-cyl to V8 swaps"?
It answers essentially all of those questions, except for the stuff about 400 HP.
That's why it's there; so the answers and people's experiences and whatnot are all in one place. Use it.

You can't bore a 350 block to more than .60 over which gives you a 360. If you want to make more power more displacement certainly helps. You can stroke it to a 383 but that will require the block to be clearanced for the added stroke of the 400 crank. You can build a 350 to 400 horsepower as well, its pretty simple. Plan on running at least 10.5:1 compression and a good set of heads. Going with a carb will be the cheapest and easiest way to make that kind of power. You should also find out if your block is a roller or non roller block, because you can't choose your cam until you know that.

Actually, if you bored it .60" over, you'd have a 463 cid...
Yes, I am going to nit-pick. It's 0.060" over. I would even accept saying 60 over. But not .60.
And, no, you can't bore it .60" over, so don't ask...
