Putting two piles of parts together
Putting two piles of parts together
So first off, I am new to 3rd gen Camaros but I have spent the last two years racing a 2nd gen on dirt, and that is about as familiar as I am with F bodies.

I have been fixing & hopping up Volvo's the past 10 years though, have had too many to count but this is my 83' 244 Turbo race car.

I was going to race that car this season in SCCA's ITE class, but I decided I would find something more simple and cheaper to operate that I can get seat time in.
So a month ago I found an excellent deal on a 91' Z28 set up for NASA's Camaro Mustang Challenge series. It had everything I needed, minus an engine. The P/O ripped out most of the wiring since he was planning on going to a 4bbl spec carb for the series [Holley 4776]. I picked it up with the trailer for $3300.

I started saving up money to build a fresh engine with the 4bbl carb and lots of other good parts, but I got the itch to just get the darn car drivable so I can get my competition license.
One day I came across an ad on craigslist for what was listed as an 89' Corvette engine w/TPI setup for what seemed to be a screaming deal. Guy bought it from his friend who had it in his rock crawler [he showed me the video of it running before they pulled it] to use in his sandrail but it was too big for the frame. For $700 got the engine, ecu, harness, sensors, mallory 6ezl ignition, 255 lph fuel pump and headers [not for camaro - sold them].
Started swapping the engine in last week - switched to solid engine mounts and also took the time to change the oil pan [using a Canton road race pan] and most of the bottom end seals/gaskets. Also got a new clutch and flywheel in too.
But here is where I am at now - I took the wiring harness that came with the engine I bought and tore it apart to make everything clean and simple. Everything was labeled and I noticed there is a plug that goes to a torque converter and also that the VSS is a one wire sensor. The harness I got came with the sensor it attaches to that I assume goes to the transmission. But I am running a T5 manual trans and from what I can tell the VSS on that transmission has two wires.
From what I have been reading the VSS is very important for getting the right AFR's - how do I go about making it work right? Repin the wiring to the ECU to suit the two wire sensor? Get ECU reprogrammed? The ECU # is 01227165.

Also, what would be the proper way to go about deleting the EGR? I don't think the guy before me was running it [the headers have no provision for it], but it looks like the EGR temp sensor was plugged in at some point

Not required on a manual
Ultimately get it deleted in the tune , you will get a SES light with the EGR temp sensor gone and the tune has different settings for when EGR is in operation;
probably not a concern if you are racing at WOT as EGR is only engaged under cruise conditions
Physically just block the EGR entry port at rear of intake

or remove the EGR valve and use a block off plate there

On the Vette w/ '165 ECM , the VSS signal comes from the dash cluster
90 -92 cars with the '730 ECM had the 2 VSS wires direct to the ECM with a output then to the dash for the speedo

Do a search , there are any buffer box threads
Re: Putting two piles of parts together
On a 86 - 89 F-Body '165 ECM ,the VSS wires go to the buffer box which drives the speedo and supplies the VSS input on the single wire to the ECM (terminal A10 )

Are the 165 ECM's different between the Corvette & F-Body's? Although I was told my stuff is from a Corvette how can I make sure of that? Also if it is, do I have the option of wiring in a buffer box [two wires from the VSS, 1 wire to the ECM, 1 power and 1 ground?] as opposed to running it from the stock cluster, which I don't have anymore [I eliminated the stock cluster and plan on running a set of Auto Meter gauges from my Volvo that I switched over to a Racepak dash]
Thanks again!
