AWD Third Gen? [ NOT jacked up 4x4 ]
AWD Third Gen?
seen one?
built one?
NOT TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE PUTTING A 4X4 UNDER ONE ALL JACKED UP YUCK........
Talking stock ride height, can't tell anything is different.
[ cept maybe 4 tire burn outs]
Drop the body onto a Subaru I6 AWD chassie, add turbo?
Been dreaming of an AWD Third Gen since HS.
flame suite on...........

It's been discussed many times. If you find a donor vehicle with the correct wheelbase and width and think you can pull it off go ahead and do it but I doubt it will be anything like you want to end up with.

I got an I4 AWD Subaru right now, and its kinda fast when racing "stock" cars on the road but would need a bit more umhp.

Taking the front suspension from something like a 92 Bonneville SSEI might be a good place to start. Maybe take the whole front subframe from something like an AWD Astro? Get it with a 4.3, a 4L60, a transfer case, and the front diff and suspension all still attached. Actually, I'd get a spare third-gen, buy all those parts from the cheapest salvage yard, and strip that spare car far enough to really start measuring.

Never seen one.
However! - I have been toying with this very idea since early January.
My idea was: 4.3 Vortec with cam, heads and cheap turbo. Then scavenge a used awd system from early 90's Oldsmobile Bravada.
4.3 should sit back further in the engine bay and produce more than enough power.
Awd system should be gone through or professionally rebuilt for strength. Or you could use a part time 4x4 system just as easy.
The front pumpkin should be just ahead of the engine in theory. This is the only area that worries me. Could be tight or even impossible. You would probably have to do some work to your floor board. Could probably fabricate the fronts A-arms onto a 3rd gen F-body.
Anyways, these are some of my thoughts. Wish I had time to get some measurements. If I have time when my buddy comes over with his 1997 Jimmy, I plan to take measurements on the engine block length and get some pictures.

I always threw around the idea of just a safari/astro van AWD system in a thirdgen but never did the research. Im sure it would be expensive and lots of fabrication. But that would be one sick *** thirdgen. Twin turbo with AWD.
I would attempt it one day if I had the money. I have most of the stuff I would need tool wise too.

I have thrown around this idea as well, but what worries me the most on a system like that is what AlaskanDad mentioned about where the front axle would be. Meaning where the engine should be.
Now that I am thinking about it, I wonder if the easiest route might be a Subaru STI set up. Theoretically the only issues would be drive shaft and CV shaft length...

Only reason to use a GM system would be for a larger engine room, Turbo I6 would be plenty for me, I4 we got now is awful peppy.
Plus I wouldn't want the extra weight up front of a V8
mid engine AWD would be better for a big engine.
At some point in a yr or 2 the Sub Forest will be up in the air / ill be allowed to do anything I want with it. First thoughts were to just chop the top, doors have no window frame, 4-5 cuts and its an open top roadster. rolls bars and custom jeep like removable top.
but wheel base is close and the tire size is also, 205/70/15
