305 to 383 swap

Hey everyone,

Finally ditching my crappy 305 pretty soon, and looking for a 383 stroker with 500+ HP. I'd prefer a complete crate engine, fully dressed. I just want to drop it in, hook up, and go.

Does anybody know where I can get a fully dressed 383 stroker crate engine for a good price?

I got a price for one from my local Lordco... $9000. I wasn't all that surprised at the price but I figured I'd ask on here if anyone new where to find one for a better price?

GM crate engine: zz-383-deluxe-stroker with MSRP of $7900, add carb, headers, distributor.

Summit lists it for $6500, free shipping. Make sure you get the new version. The print says new heads and beehive springs increase torque and power to 450/450.

It'd cost him about $11k by the time he got it to Canada.

That's a ton of cash for a 383... You can build a stout motor for nearly half of that in USD.

It is fairly expensive, but the engine they priced out for me had over 500 horsepower and was fully dressed. Like drop in, hook up all connections, and done. I'd say that's almost worth it.

Unless of course there's a 500+ HP 383 for cheaper that's FULLY dressed. I mean all accessories, carb, heads, everything.

Anyone?

That one is nice, just not quite complete. I'm looking for an engine as dressed as this one is:

Nice looking engine. Although I doubt you'll find something pre-packaged looking that good. You can add the valve covers, and accessories, polish the intake (of whatever style you bolt on), etc...

I know. I just finished building a 355 that makes that kind of power and it's nowhere near $9,000 AND I've got better parts on it than that motor does just eyeballing the picture. That's a nice motor, but that's overpriced. Most of that budget is for polished parts more than anything functional. Hell, that pulley setup alone will set you back a ton.

+ that motor is not making anywhere near 500+ with what it's currently specced out from your link. That camshaft is SMALL and those heads aren't that good. 450HP maybe without any accessories or drivetrain loss, sure. Those graphs do not represent real world statistics.

Re: 305 to 383 swap

Hi there Jdawg, I purchased from Unitedracingengines.com about 5 years ago, my buddy purchased from tristarengines.com about 2 years ago. I would recommend either engine builder. They offer more than what is listed on their websites.

That's one one Skip Whites 383's... They do look very nice. I was tempted to buy one myself but after doing a bit of research, decided against it. Just my opinion but I got lucky and found a trusted and local machinist - chevy enthusiast. He is in the process of building me a 350 Chevy. The cost difference may be slightly higher due to my insistance of quality parts, but can't put a price on peace of mind!

What about the $$$$ required to upgrade the drive line to handle 500Hp or are you just going to idle it in your driveway
and admire the shine on the bling?

Too right, thats what put me off a 383.... The money required for the drivetrain mods would soon turn into a bottomless pit! Not to mention the possible additions to the chassis that could be needed to stop it twisting when you really put your foot down! And if you still need your computer, there's even more expense getting the right chip etc. My head started to hurt just thinking about all the things needed to accomodate a 383.
