Your chip in the key is called VATS. A search can bring up a lot of threads about it.

I have no idea what you need to know about the distributor. They're all electronic. GM hasn't made a points distributor since 1973
Re: Help....advice please!!!!
Ok sorry for confusion.... What I'm wanting to do is get rid of all the wires I don't need I still want all my lights to work going to use my own mechanical gauges and tach.... And how undoing the ECM would affect the vats and transmission (700r4) and fans.... I've been looking around trying to find info not really getting what I want.... Could somebody tell me what exactly I need to do or post the thread I need to be reading

First of all we need to determine what you have to swap into the car. We need details about the motor and its components.
If you remove the ECU, you can remove the harness that goes to it from under the fender. Unplug it, do not go cutting wires. My best advice would be to get the motor in and running before removing wires.
Here are a few post / links / stickies to check out.

Once we get some details (plus pics would be nice) we can start helping.

A large cap, non computer controlled HEI distributor is the easiest ignition system to install in a GM. It's all self contained. Just needs a clean power connection and an ignition source.
